CRG/Maxter WSK Report

The second meeting of the WSK Euro Series, which took place on the South Garda Karting Circuit at Lonato with the participation of 254 drivers, showed once more the toughness of this international karting championship. Among the top competitors CRG-Maxter and its drivers, from the young Max Verstappen to very well known champions like Jonathan Thonon or the new entry Norman Nato.

KF3-Verstappen

At Lonato the world of karting could definitely understand who is, in the new generation of drivers, the new star in international karting: the talented young driver Max Verstappen, at his debut in the KF3 category and undisputed leader of the championship with the performing CRG-Maxter.

After winning another time in the last heat of the weekend at Lonato, the not yet thirteen year old Dutch driver, son of the former F1 driver Jos Verstappen, won the prefinal rather smoothly and then, in the final, led a wise race: he was second with few laps to go and avoided useless risks keeping the position till the chequered flag. Verstappen’s leading position in the championship is now much steadier: he has got 115 points, 45 points ahead of his competitors.

In the top gear-shift category – the KZ1 – the three time world champion for CRG Jonathan Thonon is the new top driver of the ranking. He achieved a double excellent result at Lonato: second in the pre-final, after an outstanding recovery, and third on the podium of the final. Great surprise from the new entry for CRG Norman Nato, who immediately showed to have a great race pace. The seventeen year old French driver was completely at ease on the CRG-Maxter, and got a brilliant third place in the pre-final. In the final he even did better: he achieved a terrific second place before the other CRG driver Thonon. Thonon is now the new leader of the championship with 85 points, 8 points ahead of his rivals.

Also in KF2 great satisfactions for the colours of CRG-Maxter, and this time thanks to a sixteen year old performing driver: the pretty Danish girl Michelle Gatting, who achieved four second places in four qualifying heats and was then protagonist both in the pre-final and the final. In the pre-final, the CRG Junior Team driver fought inch by inch for the third place, but her race conduct, according to the stewards, was pushed beyond the limits and she was given a ten second penalty which pushed her back to 16th position.

The final was so characterized by her recovery: her race was absolutely gripping till the end and she arrived 4th at the chequered flag, just a step away from the podium. She is now 5th and well determined to gain positions in the championship.

Only in Super KF CRG-Maxter performed under expectations. The best result arrived from the reigning world champion Arnaud Kozlinski. After a crash in the pre-final which relegated him in the last rows of the final starting grid, he completed his recovery with an excellent 7th place, but he could have done definitely better than this without the pre-final crash.

Davide Forè was very unlucky. He was very motivated and determined after battling for the Superpole, but in the pre-final a crash slowed him down and then, in the final, he had to be content with the 13th place.

Eddy Tinini too was definitely unlucky. He performed excellently in the pre-final but was obliged to retire for technical troubles when he was among the best drivers in the first laps of the race.

Troubled weekend for Felice Tiene, who did not get any points this time after the excellent result of the last race at Muro Leccese. The next meeting of the WSK Euro Series is due for next 18th April at Zuera – Spain.

Giancarlo Tinini, CRG Chairman: “In this second WSK meeting we only missed the final win to be thoroughly satisfied. However, we achieved excellent performances in KF3 with Verstappen, in KF2 with Gatting and in KZ1 with Nato and Thonon. We are disappointed for how things went in Super KF: in this category we didn’t get good performances but we are already focusing on the problem and I think we can sort it out really soon. For the next race at Zuera we’ll be for sure more competitive and our goal is the win.”

Jonathan Thonon, KZ1: “It was a tough race. I did a good performance in the pre-final: I started from 6th place and I recovered till second place. The chassis was perfect and the engine was absolutely performing. In the final I started third, but during the race it was quite tough to keep the pace of the other drivers. However, I tried to get onto the podium and I did it. It was a good result for the championship, because now I’m the leader of the ranking. I want to say thanks to all the CRG team, because they really did a good job for me.”

Norman Nato, KZ1: “I’m really happy because it was my first race with CRG and I immediately got a good result. Third place in the pre-final and runner-up in the final means that I really had a good weekend. For me it was a great satisfaction. The start of the race was a bit tough, but then, lap after lap, I felt more at ease with the CRG chassis. The engine was simply perfect: if there had been one more lap, I could have won!”

Max Verstappen, KF3: “I did a good race, especially for the championship. I won the pre-final and I was the runner-up of the final after leading the race for the first 16 laps. Then I battled with Albon, but with four laps to go I preferred not to risk anything and to be content with the second place. This is a result which keeps me on the top of the ranking, that’s why I’m happy, especially for the championship. Now I’m already thinking about the next race: I hope to keep on this way.”

Arnaud Kozlinski, SKF: “In the pre-final I had a crash which meant that the game was over for me. Then, in the final, I think I did the best I could with the stuff I had at my disposal. We were under our potentialities and that’s why we have to work to match the other teams. Anyway, I’m confident and I think we’ll win again really soon.”
