Aussie Wins Kiwi Nationals

Canberra's Jackson Delamont has won the junior KF3 class at the New Zealand Nationals. Delamont took a narrow win ahead of Bradley Hicks, Andy Schofield and Arie Hutton.

Delamont started fourth in the final and slowly worked his way forward, taking the lead from Schofield with only a handful of laps left. He had previously qualified fastest and carded 7th and 2nd in the heats.

Of the other Aussies competing, Lane Moore was 9th in Yamaha Heavy and 10th in Rotax Heavy (after qualifying fastest). Trent Moore and Bruce Otter were 7th and 13th respectively in Rotax Heavy.

Established New Zealand KartSport stars Josh Hart, Ryan Grant and Matthew Hamilton proved too good for their up-and-coming competition at the Quality Inn Napier 2010 KartSport New Zealand National Sprint Championship meeting at Hastings in the Hawke's Bay over the weekend.

Hart, the Palmerston North driver who has been competing professionally in Europe for the past two years, was one of only two drivers - the other was Grant - to clean sweep a class over the three days, qualifying quickest then winning the heats, Pre-Final and Final in the 125cc Rotax Max Light class on Sunday.

Daniel Kinsman, the young gun from Auckland who won the New Zealand Junior Yamaha class title at the Nationals last year, got the closest of the other drivers in the 125cc Rotax Max Light class, throwing down a challenge to Hart in qualifying and in the Pre-Final (the race which determines the grid for the Final).

Come the winner-takes-all Final however and Hart led every lap to add the 2010 New Zealand 125cc Rotax Max Light title to his already impressive CV. Kinsman was second from long-time Hart sparring partner Andrew Hoare from Palmerston North, with Christchurch young gun Chris Cox fourth ahead of defending class title holder Ryan Urban and Christchurch drivers Matthew Straker and Matthew Hamilton.

Hart and Hamilton also came up against each other in the Senior 100cc Yamaha Light class on Saturday, with Hart again qualifying quickest and winning the heats and Pre-Final but Hamilton winning the Final, the 2010 New Zealand class title and the coveted prize that goes with it, a trip to the 2010 Toyota All Japan Challenge meeting in Japan later this year.

Ryan Grant, meanwhile, was one of the first drivers to win a 2010 title at this year's event, turning the tables on 2009 champion, teammate Graeme Smyth, in the KZ2 class on Friday.

Like Hart in the 125cc Rotax Max Light class, Grant was unbeaten, qualifying quickest before winning the heats, Pre-Final and Final, the latter from Smyth, reigning North Island champion Daniel Bray and last year's Open class champion Richard Moore.

Open, on the other hand, was one the last titles decided - being one of the four classes contested on Sunday - with Daniel Bray the pace-setter until the Final when the advantage - and with it the 2010 New Zealand title - swung in fellow Aucklander Tony Chambers' favour.

In the other two classes 125cc Rotax Max Heavy had a distinct South Island flavour to it with 2008 New Zealand champion Hamish Cross eventually getting the better of defending title-holder Simon Hunter.

Both were pipped for pole position in qualifying by visiting Australian driver Lane Moore, but the races were dominated by the two Southern Men, Hunter winning the first heat and the Pre-Final, Cross the second heat and the Final, the latter from Hunter, the first of the North Island drivers, Bradley Tyrrell, and another South Islander, Mark Coulbeck who impressed with a forceful drive from 10th on the grid to fourth at the flag.

The Australian contingent got their revenge in the KF3 class where the Final - and with it the 2010 New Zealand title - went to young Canberra driver Jackson Delamont.

Delamont signaled his intention to be taken seriously by outqualifying  North Island champion Bradley Hicks and two-time CIK Trophy of New Zealand title holder Arie Hutton, though both came back strongly, Hicks winning the first heat from Hutton and Cambridge driver Andy Schofield, Hicks' and Hutton's usual Auckland sparring partner Paul Blomqvist the second from  Hutton and Delamont and Hutton the Pre-Final from Schofield, Hicks and Delamont.

It was Schofield who jumped to an early lead in the Final, only to be caught and eventually passed by the determined Delamont, the Australian setting a new class lap record on his way to victory from Hicks Schofield and Hutton.

Day 2 (Saturday)

Matthew Hamilton's 'repeat' win in the Senior 100cc Yamaha Light class was the big story on Saturday, the 26-year-old turning the tables on arch-rival Josh Hart late in a Final which - until that point - looked like Hart's for the taking.

Arguably the most popular win on the second day of competition, however, was Taranaki driver Michael Kiser's in the 100cc Yamaha Heavy class.

Having finished runner-up four times in the past, finally winning the New Zealand title was real dream-come-true stuff for the Taranaki man who reckoned a recent 10 month trip to Europe was just what the doctor ordered.

"I didn't race, just went to a few meetings, looked at what people were doing and brought a few ideas back with me. That helped, as I think did being out of the seat for so long. Ten months is a long time for a petrol head like me and I'll tell you what, I was hanging out to get back behind the wheel when I got home!"

Second quickest in qualifying and the winner of the first heat was Wellington driver Karl Wilson. But Wilson, who started the Final third behind Kiser and Tyrrell felt his engine tighten late in the race and pulled off the track.

In the other class contested on Saturday, eventual winner James Penrose was not the quickest of the Junior 100cc Yamaha runners; that title went to Josh Drysdale from the Manawatu.

Once Penrose got a handle on the hot, sticky track conditions however, the former New Zealand Junior Restricted 100cc Yamaha title holder from North Loburn in Canterbury was away, winning the second heat from Arie Hutton, Aaron Marr and Josh Drysdale, the Pre-Final from Marr, Drysdale and Christchurch driver Tom Alexander, then the Final from Marr, Hayden Pedersen, Jaden Hardy and Hutton.

Hutton claimed a new class track record in what was one of the drives of the day to get from the rear of the grid to fifth after losing a plug cap and failing to complete the Pre-Final.

Usual sparring partner Bradley Hicks was also in the wars, crashing heavily in the Pre-Final and failing to complete the Final.

Day 1 (Easter Friday)

On the first day of competition on Friday local hero Maddison Wise won the New Zealand Junior Restricted 100cc Yamaha class title with a display which included setting the fastest lap time in qualifying and winning both heats and the Final.

The title win is Wise's second, the young Hawke's Bay driver having claimed the New Zealand Cadet class when the Nationals were contested in Blenheim in 2008.

Auckland's Ryan Grant claimed the day's only clean sweep, earning the 2010 New Zealand KZ2 class title by qualifying quickest then winning the two heats, Pre-Final and Final, the latter from teammate and 2009 champion Graeme Smyth and reigning North Island champion Daniel Bray.

It wasn't quite as clear-cut in the Cadet class, eventual runner-up, Taylor Harte - representing one of the smallest clubs in the country, the Eastern Bay of Plenty Kart Club - qualifying quickest and winning the first heat but eventual title winner Thomas Ingram taking the second (heat), then the Pre-Final and Final, the latter from Harte and local driver Jakob Flynn.

The Quality Inn Napier 2010 KartSport New Zealand National Sprint Championship meeting attracted a record-equalling 200+ field of competitors from all over New Zealand to the Hawke's Bay Karting Club's ZM Raceway at Fernhill north-west of Hastings over the Easter weekend.
