press release

Gympie Junior Karters Harrison Oddie and Lauren Coomber are preparing for some tough competition on the Queen’s Birthday weekend (12th & 13th June) at Cooloola Coast Kart Club’s Gympie Gold Raceway, when they line up against some of the other State’s best Junior Karting talent in the inaugural “Cooloola Junior Gold” race meeting.

Karters and their families from across the State are expected to converge on Gympie for a 3 day event supported by major partners “Caloundra Body Works” and other associate event partners. Although many of the Team transporters are expected to begin arriving on Thursday, the weekend’s program kicks off with practice on Friday followed by racing on Saturday and Sunday.

Young Gympie Midget class karter, Harrison Oddie is all revved up for the big regional event. Having already banked some great racing results in the State-wide Supercheap Auto Kart Series Rounds, winning Round 1 and finishing 2nd in Round 2, Harrison also recently stepped up on to the podium at the Lismore Young Guns Titles at the Northern Rivers event to claim 4th in his class. The youngster has been in “red hot” form of recent times also winning the Quality Communications Cup and finishing 2nd in Bundaberg Kart Club’s Mack Dog Challenge.

Whilst Gympie teenager Lauren Coomber, on the other hand, will be racing her last big race meeting at Cooloola before going to the senior classes. She too has had some remarkable success in recent months. Lauren finished 2nd in Lithgow at the annual National Breast Cancer fundraising Ladies Kart Series, 2nd in the Gladstone/Rockhampton Two Track Challenge event, 3rd in the Queensland State “C Grade” Titles, 4th in her Junior National class at Bundaberg Kart Club’s Mack Dog Challenge and 2nd in the Quality Communications Cup. The teenager hopes to leave her stamp on the Junior Class one last time at her home track.

Other local drivers that will be flying the Gympie Flag will be Mitch Condon, Kyle Honour, Taren Knowles and Tia Maree Duncan. All of these drivers are contenders for the very first Gold Plate up for grabs at Queensland’s premier juniors-only Kart meeting.

With the added bonus of a new Arrow Racing Kart, Yamaha engine and many other great prizes on offer, it’s expected that the “Gold Rush” fever will very quickly spread throughout the sport.

The Local Cooloola Coast Kart Club has worked hard to launch the event and give it every opportunity for success by providing a dinner and live band on Saturday night for competitors, their families and support crews, as well as putting in place new shade structures for spectators. The venue continues to develop through the tremendous support of local businesses and the continued re-investments the Club makes in their facilities.

The Cooloola Coast Kart Club does not charge a gate fee and provides a great day out for the whole family with full canteen facilities and shaded viewing areas on site. With full access to the Pit Areas for spectators (covered in shoes are a mandatory requirement) there is also a great opportunity to get up close and personal with competitors and be immersed in the action.
