3rd Win Puts McIlveen Ahead In Championship Tally

from Mark Jones

Warren McIlveen took his third race victory for the weekend at the Rockpress Australian Superkart Championship placing one hand firmly on the cup taking the pointscore lead for the first time.

Sam Zavaglia completed another 1-2 for Stockman Superkarts as the reigning champion took Darren Hossack for second position on lap six. Gary Pegoraro failed to finish, surrending his hard fought series lead to McIlveen. The Tamworth based racer now leads the series 120 points to Hossack's 115. Pegoraro still sits on 105 and needs both Hossack and McIlveen to retire from the last race to take the title.

Jason Laker continues to impress with a fourth place finish, moving up the field with each race, winning a dice with Ilya Harpas for the spot. Harpas fell back another position to Steven Murray in the closing laps and Harpas has lost fourth position in the championship to the flying Zavaglia.

The 250 Nationals finished seventh and eighth, Martin Latta striking back after hunting down Luke May over the course of the ten lap journey. Chryss Jamieson overcame a minor electrical problem, a broken coil wire, to finish ninth in his 250 International ahead of Joshua Barnett.

May still holds a 16 point lead over Latta in 250 Nationals, Latta needs a DNF from May to take the title. Brendan Luneman took third in the class, inheriting the spot after Anton Stevens late race retirement. Wayne Sprostan and Bob Fullerton rounded out the finishers. Luneman has moved into third in the 250 National title chase past Frank Giglio.

Steven Tamasi continues to dominate the weekend in 125cc and now trails Darren Dunn by just one point ahead of the last race of the season. Jeff Reed was again third in Dunn's wake with Tim Philp distantly fourth behind ahead of Lindsay Jamieson, Jeremy Shelton and Brian Wild.
