Last mont, AKA NSW issued an open letter explaining the idea:

RE: State Cup Series

I write to you personally to answer some questions that have been asked and to clear up some confusion that is surrounding the State Cup Series.

The State Cup document was circulated to the clubs during August, 2010 and was listed as an agenda item for the State Karting Council meeting held on the 9th October, 2010. This document contained the detail of the proposed series. At the State Karting Council meeting the series was discussed at length and a budget presented as to the costs of the proposed prize pool. At the conclusion of this discussion a vote was taken to approve the State Cup in principle and the final rules to be distributed and a postal vote taken prior to 30 November, 2010. Moved: Dubbo. Seconded: Teka. Voting 23 For – 1 Against – 0 Abstaining.

During the 28 day period that was allowed for comment we received comments from three clubs, these being Wollongong, Dubbo and North Shore Kart Club. These comments were reviewed by the series coordinator and the final rules forwarded to the Clubs for a postal vote.

Issue’s raised:

1. Entry Levy of $15.00.

The entry levy is to pay for the prize pool for the State Cup (North, South & Metropolitan), Closed State Championship, Open State Championship and National Championship prizes. The budget for this prize pool is $23,400.00 and is based on there being 1,560 entries for the State Cup Series. This is a responsible budget and based on previous series conducted in New South Wales. The State will pay the Permit Fee (National) for the Closed State Championship (Note: Not a Title) and $5.00 of the $10.00 National fee for a Championship
meeting.

2. Club Meetings

The requirement to qualify for Closed or Open State Championships is that you must have raced at 3 club meetings within New South Wales prior to the Closed or Open State Championship.

3. Qualify to race at Close/Open State Championships.

You must score in excess of a set number of points in the State Cup series to qualify to enter the Closed/Open State Championships. The points to be scored have been set at a very low level.

Provisional “A” and “A” grade licence holders are exempt from qualifying for entry into the Closed/Open State Championships.

Winners of the previous 2 years may apply for a wild card entry.

I do not make any pretence that this system is perfect and it may need to be amended along the way, however when I took office I clearly indicated that I would ensure that there was open and transparent governance of Australian Karting Association (NSW) Inc. The silent majority have clearly indicated that they want a State Cup Series and that they want a system that progresses karters from club level racing all the way to National level.

I am very much aware that this is a radical change from what has occurred in the last fifty years of karting in this state, however change is required for our sport to advance and compete with the many other activities that are out there in the community.

If we choose not to adopt the concept of this State Cup Series, we face another year without a state based series and our sport will suffer a further decline in club race day numbers.

They say “The longest journey starts with the first step”, the time has come for the first step in our road to recovering the sport we love so much, this will take courage and we need your support. I ask that you involve yourself in the voting process at your club.

Yours in Karting
Stephen King
President, Australian Karting Association (NSW) Inc.
