Karting Developing Closer Links With V8 Supercars

It is a well-known fact that almost every V8 Supercar driver began their careers racing karts across the country.
Over the final two V8 Supercar events of 2010, the links between karting and V8 Supercars Australia has been strengthened with a strong presence of kart racing at the Norton 360 Sandown Challenge and the Sydney Telstra 500.

The 2010 Norton 360 Challenge doubled as a celebration of 50 years for the Australian Touring Car Championship while also announcing the 50 greatest Touring Car drivers of all time.
V8 Supercars Australia invited ten young karters to be a part of the announcement of the top ten drivers in the history of the championship on the Saturday night at Sandown – a night that was a special one for everyone involved.
“These unique opportunities and meetings can shape the future of our sport. Our legends are just that - Legends. And one day, odds are we will be celebrating further with these young karters…..watch this space,” said V8 Supercars Marketing Manager Penny Glasson.

During the recent Sydney Telstra 500 the sport of karting was exposed to thousands of potential new kart racers with an interactive display stand set up inside the Dome area at the Sydney Olympic Park venue.
Throughout the weekend members of the New South Wales karting industry and community manned the display, which incorporated a variety of karts and also a Hyper Stimulator where budding racers could get behind the wheel, to speak with interested spectators.
“A big thank you must go to the team at V8 Supercars Australia for all of their help in co-ordinating the stand, it was a huge success for our sport,” said display co-ordinator Bob Baker.
“The karting industry in New South Wales got right behind it and we also had a great response from the metropolitan clubs for assistance throughout the weekend.

“It was an unmitigated success we provided almost 500 Hot to go karting DVDs to the more interested parties, handed out thousands of brochures to general on lookers and a number of people signed up to clubs immediately on the day. I’d say that we will see a good flow on effect of new comers into the sport over the coming months as a result of the stand.”
With two successful events linking karting closer to V8 Supercars, the Australian Karting Association is continuously working to further develop this relationship into 2011 and beyond to enhance the sport of karting.
