'Yamaha Challenge' CIK Support Class

press release

Last year’s East Coast Title presented a great opportunity for up and coming drivers to compete in conjunction with the CIK Stars of Karting Series aboard their Clubman and Junior National machinery.

Now, with the series expanding into five rounds – including one in South Australia – the drivers will be competing in the Yamaha Challenge during 2011. The name change is representative of the expanded series going further than just the ‘East Coast’ of Australia.

Like they did in 2010, Yamaha Motor Company Australia, who have been a long-time supporter of karting in Australia, will continue to offer some great opportunities and prizes for the competitors in the series.

“Last year’s East Coast Title was a great success for us at Yamaha with the series generating a lot of interest for the Clubman and Junior National drivers across the country,” said Yamaha Motor Company Australia’s Adam Wolfenden.

“The series provided the up and coming drivers with the opportunity to race in a professionally run series against some of the best drivers in the country while battling it out for the title and some great prizes.

“I’m delighted that we are able to be a part of the series again in 2011 and the new name certainly represents our commitment to supporting karting in Australia.”

With both East Coast Champions from 2010, Jason Hryniuk (Clubman) and Mitchell Gee (Junior National), moving into the Pro ranks in the CIK Stars of Karting Series this year it will open the door for a new champion.

“The racing in the East Coast Title was some of the best Yamaha racing in many years and I think we’re in for much of the same in 2011,” said Series Co-ordinator Peter Galvin.

“Some of the drivers I expect to figure prominently in the Clubman ranks include the likes of Kayne Hughes, Brenton Simonds, Thomas Phillips, Aaron Borg and Alex Baker.

“In the Junior National category the action will again be hotly contested with some good young steerers coming into the series, including three-time State Champion James Abela, James Duckworth and Tom Chitty.”

The opening round of the Yamaha Challenge will be held in conjunction with Round One of the CIK Stars of Karting Series in Ipswich on February 26/27.
