Local Lad Aiming For The Stars

press release

Ipswich Grammar Student Brock Plumb finished runner-up in last year’s CIK Stars of Karting Series, in 2011 he's aiming to go one better.

brock plumbWith the series kicking off this weekend on his home track at Willowbank, the year nine student is aiming to start the five round series off on a high note and show Australia’s best young drivers how it's done.

However, the youngster knows he will face tough opposition in the strong field that includes the likes of defending Pro Junior (KF3) champion Pierce Lehane, dual Australian champion Joseph Mawson and New Zealand champion Aaron Marr.

"Last year was a big learning curve for me, so to finish second was great but Pierce really dominated the series. If I can get a head start on him this weekend on my home track I think it would be a great way to start the series," said Plumb.

"We found out last year that all of the junior guys were strong on their home track so I’ve really got to make this round count. Due to the rain over the Christmas period we really haven’t done a lot of testing in the pre-season but I’m confident we’ll be fast enough come finals time on Sunday."

Plumb will once again be campaigning aboard a European-made Birel kart in the CIK Stars of Karting Series with the support of local businesses Champions Way Kart Supplies and Coach Concepts.

In an effort to lift himself to the next level Plumb will also have Lismore’s Graham Armstrong and Pete Crossington in his support crew, both of which share the duties of engine tuner, mechanic and mentor.

"Generally in karting it is normally only your Mum, Dad and family that you have as a mechanic but when you move to the elite level you really need to make sure you’ve got access to the most knowledge you can have," said Plumb.

"My family have been, and continue to be, great supporters of my racing but like you see in all other sports you have a coach who mentors you and karting at the top level is no different. Both Graham and Pete have got a heap of experience and hopefully they will be able to assist me in my goal of winning the championship this year."
