Mawson 'Cooled’ After CIK Podium

press release

Suffering from a technical issue with a timing transponder, Joseph Mawson still managed to clinch 2nd in the Pro Junior Class at the CIK Stars of Karting opening round at Ipswich Raceway at the weekend.

In an event that sees the absolute best of Australia’s Karting talent on show, Joey’s luck was dealt a savage blow in qualifying, when his timing transponder failed to record his quickest time with the official results, despite in fact being a tenth quicker than the rest of the field. As a result, Mawson was forced to start from the final grid spot, 21st.

Despite the poor grid position for heat one, Joey used his talent and experience to drive his Arrow kart toward the front, in a manner that had to be seen to be believed. Finishing 6th in Heat one, Mawson was instilled with some confidence following the poor starting position.

For Heat two, Joey again started from the rear of the grid, using his best skills to avoid the first lap carnage; he was able to continue on and record a 2nd, which was yet again another astonishing effort, only missing the win due to a lack of remaining laps.

Joey suffered a race ending blow on the first lap of heat three, with a fellow competitor contacting his rear wheel, causing it to go flat, hence, an unwanted forced retirement from the race. In the pre-final, Joey started from 8th, and fired to a podium finish; clinching 3rd setting him up for a strong contest with his star peers around him in the final.

With the final event upon him, Joey was starting from 3rd, and by the second lap, all was looking well for a win, after progressing to 2nd, but it was Pierce Lehane who took the chequered flag, while Mawson maintained his consistent position, completing the weekend in 2nd.

Joey said following the final in Ipswich, “I was pretty happy with the weekend to finish 2nd place on my debut. Especially after having to start last (21st) in the heats.”

It was news on Wednesday however that truly did embrace the talent of Joseph Mawson, and brought him and his family a mountain of excitement, as he was announced as the Fujitsu ‘Cool’ Driver for Karting for NSW.

The popular development program attracted 370 entries from young aspiring drivers across Australia. The selected drivers will receive financial and career support from Fujitsu General Australia and Velocity Management Group which is lead by motorsport media icon, Chris Jewell.

Joey will now be supported in his continual quest to first make Formula Ford ahead of an assault on Europe, with the ultimate goal being Formula One for the 14 year old Sydney resident.

"When I opened the email I thought I had probably missed out, but then I read it and I was just overwhelmed that I had been chosen to be part of the Fujitsu “Cool” Driver Program … I just couldn’t believe it and nor could my Dad – I just had so many emotions going through my head.

"It’s an unbelievable opportunity and I am proud to be one of the seven Karters who’ve been selected,” Mawson said following being announced as one of the inaugural team of drivers.

The next round of the CIK Stars of Karting will be held at Bolivar Raceway, South Australia on April 1 and 2.
