CIK Stars of Karting Heads to Adelaide

press release

Australia’s elite karting series, the CIK Stars of Karting Series presented by Castrol EDGE, will make a return to South Australia next weekend (April 2/3) at the Bolivar Raceway for the first time in almost six years.

With former champions of the series including last weekend’s Clipsal 500 winner Jamie Whincup, South Australian V8 Supercar driver Tim Slade and Ford Performance Racing’s Mark Winterbottom, the series is where the motorsport stars of tomorrow are born.

Across the three Pro categories being contested – Pro Light (KF1), Pro Gearbox (KZ2) and Pro Junior (KF3) – drivers from all parts of the country will be battling for the $40,000 of funding towards overseas races and prizes split across the top three drivers in the championship.

Gladstone (Queensland) driver Cian Fothergill is the defending champion in the Pro Light (KF1) category and the Tracksa Australia-backed pilot took a clean sweep at the opening round of the 2011 series last month in Ipswich.

Fothergill was shadowed for much of the weekend by Melbourne’s Adam Hughes with Gold Coaster James Macken and the Tony Kart trio of Grant and Joel Smith and Aidan Wright.

Salisbury East’s (South Australia) Ben Edwards made his debut in the series at Ipswich but was plagued by mechanical gremlins. With the home track advantage next weekend, the 23 year-old has got his sights set on a top result.

The Pro Gearbox (KZ2) category will see the largest number of drivers assembled on the grid next weekend since the six-speed engines made their debut in Australia ten years ago.

With a full grid of 32 Pro Gearbox (KZ2) drivers entered for the round, all of whom will reach speeds in excess of 120 km/h on the main straight at the Bolivar Raceway, the racing will be action-packed.

Melbourne’s Matthew Wall is the defending champion in the category but he will face tough opposition from the likes of last year’s runner-up Kel Treseder (Bundaberg, QLD), rising stars Tyler Greenbury (Toowoomba, QLD) and Chris Hays (Gold Coast, QLD) along with Melbourne’s Troy Woolston.

Victorian David Sera will jet straight from Florida in America where he is battling for the Florida Winter Tour Championship to compete in next weekend’s event. In his only start in the CIK Stars of Karting Series last August, Sera was victorious.

Modbury’s (South Australia) Scott Taylor was impressive on his way to a top ten finish during the opening round and may well challenge for a spot on the podium on his home track.

The Pro Junior (KF3) ranks are flooded with emerging talent. At the top of the list is the New South Wales pair of Pierce Lehane and Joseph Mawson. Lehane won last year’s championship but his opposition has closed the gap this year and he has certainly got a fight on his hands as he chases back-to-back titles.

Flying the flag for the local drivers in the Pro Junior (KF3) ranks will be Banksia Park driver George Gutierrez.

Also being contested is round two of the Yamaha Challenge for the Clubman and Junior National classes along with the Sportsman 125 category for the local drivers.
