Mike Vincec: Florida Winter Tour DD2 Champion

press release

Coming into the final rounds of the Florida Winter Tour with a commanding lead in the Rotax DD2 championship standings, 20-year-old Mike Vincec had his eye on the prize: securing the DD2 championship and earning a repeat invite to the 2011 edition of the Olympics of karting, the Rotax Max Challenge Grand Finals.  With the tour wrapping up at the Ocala Gran Prix facility in Ocala, Florida all eyes would be on Vincec and his PSL Karting.com crew as they looked to secure the feat and add Vincec as the third member named to Team Canada.s"

Setting the stage for the Saturday run, Vincec placed his PSL prepared CRG in the third position during qualifying.  An uneventful prefinal saw the 2008 eKartingNews.com Driver of the Year steer himself to a smart and respectable fourth place finish.

With an often time difficult outside second row starting position for the final, Vincec was able to get through the first corner melee and even managed to move up one position.  Disaster would strike however on the next corner as Vincec ran into trouble after being hit from behind attempting to pass for another position, sliding off track and falling down the running order. Now last on track, Vincec had major ground to make up to keep his championship hopes alive.

With the championship on his mind, yet not knowing exactly where he needed to finish to wrap it up, Vincec had the next 24 laps to regain his composure.  An epic drive would ensue, as Vincec climbed his way through the pack picking off thirteen karts in a mere nine laps.  Clocking the fastest lap of the race, Vincec didn't have enough to catch the leaders but his fourth place finish earned him enough points to be proclaimed the Florida Winter Tour DD2 champion.

"This is a great start to our 2011 campaign for both myself and the entire PSL Karting team. Having the opportunity to go to the Grand Finals for a second time to represent Canada is just awesome and we hope to have the opportunity to bring another world championship home," commented Mike.

With the championship securely in hand, Vincec sat out for Sunday's events except for podium presentations where he took top honors in the headline class at the Florida Winter Tour. Crowned the Rotax DD2 champion, Vincec was presented with the coveted invitation to the Rotax Max Challenge Grand Finals, set for November 19-26 at Al Ain Raceway in Al Ain, United Arab Emirates.  This will mark Vincec's second trip to the Grand Finals, as he represented Canada in 2007 at the same circuit.

Up next for Vincec will be the Eastern Canadian Karting Championship at the first event at Goodwood, ON. For more information on Mike Vincec, please visit www.mikev.ca.
