Bray Retains Series Lead In Colorado

press release

While the feature wins eluded him on both days, New Zealand karter Daniel Bray retained his S1 Pro Stock Moto class lead in this year's SuperKarts USA Pro Tour standings at the Mothers SummerNationals meeting in Colorado over the weekend.

Outright speed was never an issue at the big double-header (Rnd 3 of the series was held on Saturday, Rnd 4 on Sunday) meeting, the 24-year-old Aucklander who drives for the California-based GP West/RM Kartwerks team claiming pole position on each day then going on to win both heat races on Saturday then claiming two second places on Sunday.

The feature races, however, were a different story.

On Saturday Bray was hit and sent spinning off the track by top American driver Brad Dunford, eventually finishing seventh after storming back through the field. Then on Sunday a gearbox problem late in the race saw him fade to fifth after running second early on.

With bonus points for pole and two heat wins on Saturday, however, Bray actually increased his class lead after the first day of competition. And he still retained a healthy 62 point margin after the second.

"Which I can't really be disappointed with, can I," he said this afternoon (NZ time). "It was always going to be a bit of a learning curve running at such a high altitude (the Grand Junction track is 2,895 metres above sea level) and in such heat (day time temperatures were over 30 degrees C) so to come away with the lead still intact is definitely a bonus with just the two Vegas rounds to go."

The weekend's meeting was the second of three double-headers which comprise this year's SuperKarts USA Pro Tour with the final to be contested at the annual SKUSA SuperNationals meeting in Las Vegas in November.
