Stars of Karting Head To Newcastle Next Weekend

press release

Australia’s elite kart racers will be heading to the Hunter Valley region in New South Wales next weekend (July 30/31) to compete in the penultimate round of the CIK Stars of Karting Series presented by Castrol EDGE.

The event, originally scheduled for Newcastle's Cameron Park venue for mid September, has been swapped with the venue for round four - Sydney’s Eastern Creek International Karting Raceway - due to delays with the resurfacing of the Sydney venue.

More than 120 of the best drivers, representing all mainland states of Australia and New Zealand, will be in action next weekend while racing at speeds in excess of 120 km/h around the undulating circuit.

Victorian Jake Spencer leads the way in the chase for the James Courtney trophy in the Pro Light (KF1) category.  However, reigning champion and defending Newcastle winner Cian Fothergill (Gladstone, QLD) is fresh from a victory in the most recent round and will be aiming to further close the gap at the top of the points table next weekend.

The karts used in the Pro Light (KF1) are similar to those used in the European and World Karting Championships producing up to 40 horsepower and at many tracks drivers will endure up to five times the force of gravity in the corners.

The battle for the Pro Gearbox (KZ2) Championship is an intense one, with the top five drivers separated by a mere 21 points.  With a maximum of 85 points up for grabs in each of the remaining two rounds, the champion is far from being decided.

Last year it was Pierce Lehane (Castle Hill, NSW) who dominated the Pro Junior (KF3) Championship, however, in 2011 the opposition has closed the gap on the Sydneysider.

The likes of Joseph Mawson (Hinchenbrook, NSW), Jake Klarich (Perth, WA), Thomas Randle (Narre Warren, Vic), Joseph Burton-Harris (Rousehill, NSW) and Jake Coleman (Glenmore Park, NSW) are all expected to mix it with Lehane as they battle for the top honours next weekend.

Also being contested alongside the three Pro categories is the Yamaha Challenge for Clubman and Junior National competitors.  There is also a support class for the youngsters, Rookies, where many young local drivers aged between 10 and 12 will be competing.

Practice for round four of the CIK Stars of Karting Series presented by Castrol EDGE will be held on Friday July 29 ahead of qualifying and heat races on Saturday July 30.  The finals will be held from 9am on Sunday July 31.

The Newcastle Kart Racing Club is located on Cameron Park Drive at Cameron Park.

Admission is free for spectators.
