Speedway Round 6 A 'Classic' Meetingpress release Round 6 of the New South Speedway Kart Club’s 2011 Championship sponsored by Carline Automotive lived up to all expectation of its given name “The Classic”. The meeting was run under threatening skies and with a forecast that was indicating late rain. After three wash-outs already this year, everyone was hoping this one could get run and won. In the end the rain held off until 15 minutes after the last event - to everyone’s delight (and relief!). On track the racing was nothing short of spectacular. After a month’s lay off due to the last meeting being washed out, it was evident all drivers were itching to get racing and, once on the track, they delivered with fantastic speedway action.
The Nepean crew had been working overtime to get the track in perfect condition for the upcoming Australian Titles and reports from drivers on Sunday indicate that it is the best it has ever been, which has everyone anticipating that the Titles will be one spectacular event. The first class to hit the circuit was the Rookie class. The field had seven very talented drivers on the day and the racing was very hard, fast and fair. In a very dominate performance, Luke Sayre took a clean sweep winning all three heats and the final. Young Luke was chased to the chequered flag by Andrew Beattie who finished 2nd in all races. 3rd place in heats 1 and 3 went to Taylor Rietdyk with Lachlan Caunt 3rd in heat 2 and Taylor Coghlan taking 3rd in the final. The result of the heat races saw Luke take his first round win of the season and break Andrew’s four-round winning streak.
Final placings for the Karting World / Sayre Racing sponsored Rookies were: The Clubman Light followed next and former Club Champion, Michael Jordan, made a cameo appearance in the class for the day and took victory in heats 1, 2 and 3 with Dan Morris taking feature race honours . As was the case in the Rookie class, Jason Woodward finished 2nd in all four races and the 3rd place positions were Sean Mayo in heats 1 and the final and Matt Pescod in heats 2 and 3. The big boys of the Clubman Heavy class was up next and it turned out to be an eventful day for the class with a number of on-track incidences. Regardless, the racing was hard and fast and it was Gary Slarke and Tim Baker sharing race victories with Gary wining heats 1 and 3 and Tim winning heat 2 and the final. Second placing in the heats went to four different drivers with Daniel Selmes in heat 1, Anthony Selmes heat 2, Tim Baker heat 3 and Joel Rhind in the final. The 3rd placings went to David Cochran heat 1, Daniel Selmes heat 2 and the final and Joel Rhind heat 3.
Once tallied the final placings for the Carline Automotive Clubman Heavy Class were: The Mighty Midgets with a 13 kart field were next out and it was that racer, Kaidon Brown, again dominating the field with wins in heats 1 and 3 and victory in the final. The clean sweep for Kaidon was only upset in heat 2 when Liam Walker took the race win. 3rd place in heat 1 went to Liam Camilleri, heat 2 Kaidon Brown, heat 3 Jake Donaldson and in the final Liam Walker. The final placings for the Coghlan Oval Track Team sponsored Midgets were:
With only the KT Modified classes left to run it was the Light class up first and again there was another class “clean sweep” with Daniel Gow taking victory in all four races. Second place in each heat however was shared between three drivers with James Melling taking heats 1 and 3, lady racer Nicole Callega in heat 2 and race day sponsor Peter Bourke in the final. Heat 1 saw Dean Green achieve his best result to date with a 3rd place, heat 2 was claimed by James Melling, heat 3 Nicole Callega and the final saw Kyle Caunt come in 3rd. The final placings for the Hopping’s Mowers sponsored KT Light Class were: The KT Pro class was last to use the circuit for the day and once again the racing in this very highly competitive class was some of the best speedway action you will see anywhere. Three drivers greeted the chequered flag first throughout the day. In heat 1 David Boyd showed the field the way home and in heats 2 and 3 Michael Jordan found some speed to take victory. Former East Coast Modified driver David Hopping took out the feature win. Coming home in 2nd place for the first heat was Michael Jordan, in the second heat it was Wayne Baines, third heat David Boyd and Michael again in the final. Heat 1 and the feature saw Wayne Baines finish 3rd, heat 2 it was David Boyd and heat 3 saw Cameron Coghlan home 3rd. The racing on the super fast Nepean circuit was first class and sets the scene for what is going to be an epic Australian Titles event in just under a month’s time.
