Passion Leads V8 Fans To Kart Track

press release

It’s no secret that the stars in the V8 Supercar Championship Series spent much of their formative years in karting.

V8 Supercar Fan Group founder Justin Murray in action on the kart track. This Championship is built on the loyal support of hundreds of thousands of fans across the world, many of who may never have experienced the thrill of wheel to wheel racing.  Three of the V8 Supercar Championship’s biggest fans fitted this category – until recently.

As the founder of the V8 Supercars Fan Group, Justin Murray’s (right) life revolves around the V8 Supercars despite never having actually competed in any form of motorsport himself.

However, he and fellow V8 Supercar Fan Group members Nick Christensen and Mark Richards have been bitten by the ‘karting bug’ recently and are thoroughly enjoying their time behind the wheel at the Cooloola Coast Kart Club.

“I was a different kid when I was younger. Most kids watch playschool but I watched V8 Supercars, F1, NASCAR, basically anything that was on and about racing. Kids would listen to their favourite music on the school bus but I listened to the V8 Supercar Panelbeaters podcasts,” said Murray.

“After I went down and watched a race weekend, the racing bug took over as soon as I seen kids as young as 10 out there racing. I didn’t want them to be having all of the fun, so I got myself a go kart and never looked back since.”

With the Velocity Kartsport trio frequently building on their consistency on the karting track, Christensen recently claimed the team’s maiden podium finish on the Sunshine Coast in Queensland.

“To break through and finish on the podium in a race weekend is a very pleasing result and something that every one in the team has been working very hard towards,” said Christensen.

“We started the weekend with good pace and I was fairly confident after Saturday’s practice where I was one of the fastest guys. In the opening race I was running second for a long time but got pushed down the order a bit then that was followed by a DNF in race two which meant I started down the order a bit for the final race.

“After starting seventh, I was able to make the most of my opportunities and sneak onto the podium – much to the delight of everyone in the team.”

The Velocity Kartsport team are just one of thousands of people across the country, who have turned a passion for motorsport into a life in karting – as long as it doesn’t clash with a V8 Supercar event.
