British Super 1 Series, Round 5

With the focus on consolidating and improving points positions, 131 drivers arrived at the Dorset hill top circuit of Clay Pigeon for the fifth of seven rounds in the championship. Drivers are permitted to drop their two worst scoring finals. Racing Steps Foundation supported Ben Barnicoat stormed to two KF3 wins, whilst Jamie Caroline hit top form for two Cadet victories. Billy Monger and Owen Griffiths shared the Super Cadet wins, the class swollen by some guests, whilst Jack Partridge and Stephen Letts took the Junior TKM honours. Rory Pringle had the edge on the rest in senior TKM Extreme, whilst Michael Simpson and Denis Gorman took the KGP wins.

The penultimate round is at Rowrah in Cumbria on 10/11 September.

KF3 MSA British Junior Kart Championship
Ben Barnicoat stormed through almost the entire pack for a first final win, then fought off Roy Johnson to take the second as well. He moves ever closer to challenging Callan O’Keeffe and Johnson for the 2011 MSA title. Barnicoat had been excluded for a driving offence from the second heat putting him almost last on the first final grid of 21 karts. Arrowing to the front, Barnicoat eroded the not insignificant gap to the leading pair and dispatched first O’Keeffe and then Johnson going into the last lap for an amazing win. George Russell had been the early leader but fell away to fifth. After a brief challenge by Johnson in the second final, Barnicoat went on for his second maximum points score whilst Johnson had to settle for second ahead of Sam Webster and Bradley Shaw after European KF3 champion George Russell had been excluded for a driving offence when O’Keeffe had come off at the start and trailed in last of the unlapped runners. Russell had been running third until he dropped behind Webster and Bradley Shaw. O’Keeffe still leads the points table. Shaw had missed all of Saturday’s qualifying and heat for a family engagement, and despite non-finishing the first final vaulted to fourth in the second. Ricky Collard missed almost all of the racing after being excluded from the meeting for an ineligible clutch drum, he will have to count the zero points towards his final score. The results from the previous round are now finalised as Barnicoat’s appeal against the decision to re-instate O’Keeffe was denied.

Comer Cadet
Alex Stott led much of the way in the first final, having a brief trade with Shanaka Clay mid race, but as the battle hotted up for the final laps, he fell to fifth, regained fourth, whilst Jamie Caroline pounced for the win and defended to the flag. Clay regained second on the last lap from Dean MacDonald. The second final was a much more static affair, Caroline leading all the way although MacDonald and Clay ran him close. The next group was headed by Stott over a fast starting Alex Quinn. Behind them there was much shuffling following a scuffle at the start. A judicial inquiry is to be held at the next round, so the results are provisional, but are unlikely to affect the top six.

Super Cadet
Billy Monger ran out to a close finish in the first final over Harrison Thomas whilst Owen Griffiths overcame his poor start to claw his way back to third. Gaby Weyer fell away at the start and failed to finish. Griffiths asserted himself at the start of the second final and kept the lead throughout over Monger. And this time it was Griffiths who plunged to last at the start whilst Weyer came up to fifth behind Matthew Taylor and Jack McCarthy.

Junior TKM
Despite falling to twelfth at the start from the outside of the front row, Jack Partridge stormed back to take the lead just after mid-distance in the first final. Toby Sowery had been on pole, but he too had problems at the start so the initial lead was taken up by the battling duo of Stephen Letts and Matt Davies before Jake Walker took up the running. Despite finishing fourth, Oliver Basey-Fisher was given a one lap penalty, so Davies was elevated to that position behind Sowery. Letts stormed to the second final win over the battling Walker, Lee Harrison and Danny Keirle whilst Basey-Fisher had another nightmare race. Jack Partridge led much of the first half then started defending a fifteen kart train, but he came off at the hairpin and the rest roared past. Although it ran to near full distance, the race was ended by a red flag to attend to a crash involving Matt Davies. Ryan Stronach’s appeal from Larkhall was not upheld, so the results from there are no longer provisional.

TKM Extreme
Rory Pringle had it all his own way in the first final despite being tracked by Ashley Jones. But Jones succumbed to a challenge from Joshua Waring at the end rapidly falling away to a lonely third whilst Joe Forsdyke had cleared Michael West and the next train for fourth. Pringle had the edge again for the second final, soon taking Waring and settling into a bigger lead. West displaced Waring whilst a late shuffle round left Forsdyke in third over Waring and Jones.

Although Michael Simpson claimed a comfortable win in the first final, Denis Gorman hurtled through the entire field to second after missing Saturday’s timed qualifying and heat due to a family engagement then coming off in his sole heat. Tom Fawcett, Tom Healy and James Gornall had all had turns in second until Gorman came through, whilst Mark Litchfleld failed to finish. He would come up to fourth in the second final, where Gorman showed he had the edge over Gornall with Simpson having to settle for third although he still leads the series when dropped scores are taken into account.
