TaG Super Series, Round 2

Round 2 of the TaG Super Series delivered some of the best racing we have seen since the inception of the series. While Lithgow turned on the good weather, the huge fields of drivers lifted the competition to new heights. Con­gratulations to all competitors on making this round such a great event. Many thanks to the Combined Districts Kart Club for a well organised meeting.

Sportsman/TaG 125 Light
A full 24 kart grid filled the Sportsman light class for qualifying. Wild-man Steel Guiliana was first out the gates followed by Gian Rossi and Hewitt. Lee Adams hit the top of the charts followed by Tullich and Fischbar. Guiliana, Attard and Erdmann all struck back with quicker times as the ses­sion kept getting faster. On the last lap Adams piped Wild-man Guiliana for pole. Rossi was third, Hewitt fourth and Attard fifth. In Heat 1 Guiliana took the lead with Hewitt, Adams, Attard & Rossi hot on his tail. While Fischbar and Erdmann were busy dicing. Lee Adams managed to pass Hewitt and pull away. Guiliana was next on Adams list soon after. Erdmann and Fischbar were continuing their tussle. Adams took heat 1 honours followed by Hewitt and Guiliana. Heat 2 suf­fered a rough and tumble start. Adams took the lead. Gian Rossi started to show his true speed slot­ting into 2nd and pushing Adams. Guiliana, Attard, Hewitt and Rogers joined the train with Nip­peress catching. On the last lap Rossi snatched the lead, Adams second. Guiliana pushed back to third. Hewitt and Rogers fourth and fifth. In the Pre Final Rossi hit the lead followed by Hewitt and Adams. Adams struck against Hewitt immediately. Erdmann was on a charge catching and chal­lenging Hewitt. Tulich, Rogers, Wilson and Fischper all came together at the end of the straight on lap three. Wilson managed to survive. Erdman still on a charge passed Hewitt up the hill. Wild-man Guiliana continues to recover from a bad start catching the top four. With two laps to go Rossi makes a mistake at the end of the back straight. Adams and Erdmann pounced, one going left and the other right but Rossi strikes back for the win ahead of Adams. Hewitt got the advantage over Erdmann while Guiliana finished 5th. In the Final Lee Adams won the start ahead of Rossi and Erdmann. Erdmann made his move early on Rossi while Adams pulled a 6 kart lead. By Lap 6 Erd­mann had caught Adams bringing Rossi, Hewiit Attard and Nipperess with him. Erdmann slid it in Ritchie McLeod style at the end of the straight under Adams. Rossi makes a move for second one lap later. Attard & Nipperess now applying the pressure to Hewitt as the top three get away. Erd­mann took the win followed by Rossi and Adams. Josh Attard was fourth while Mitchell Hewitt finished fifth.

Sportsman/TaG 125 Heavy
The incredibly tough racing from round 1 looked like child's play compared to round 2. Qualifying was tough with the top 5 drivers swapping fastest time every lap. First it was Hunter fastest, then Hryniuk. Piper put in a hot one. Then Hazelton jumped to second. The last lap was the fastest for most competitors. Hryniuk beat Hunter to the pole. Veteran Hazelton was third fastest while Davis Colton and Victor Roy impressed qualifying fourth and fifth. In Heat 1 Hunter jumped to the lead followed by Colton. Pole sitter Hryniuk had a bad start slipping to third which also caused Hazel­ton to drop to fifth. Hryniuk was making moves on Colton down the hill but could not make it stick with Colton coming back. Centofani and Hazelton both looked quick. With three laps to go Hazel­ton makes the move on Centofani down the hill. Hryniuk retires with a mechanical failure while Colton pulls Hunter back in. With the top four nose to tail Hazelton late breaks past Colton up the hill to take second behind Hunter. Centofani finished third ahead of Colton and Endres. Heat 2 was another good start for Hunter who hit the lead followed by Hryniuk and Hazelton. The top three made a short break from Colton and Piper. Hryniuk’s kart had superior speed down the hill while Hunter was faster up the hill. Colton had now made a break from Piper and began to pull in Hazel­ton. Hryniuk bridged the gap to Hunter but did not have enough to pass. Hunter took the win. Hazelton struck to take Hryniuk on the last lap for second. Colton, Centofani and Bail completed the top six. In the pre-final Hazelton won the start ahead of Hunter, Colton and Centofani. By mid race Hazelton had pulled a 5 kart lead but Hunter was beginning to close. In the middle of the field a huge battle was going on. Pontello was forcing his way through the field from last. Hryniuk was charging from tenth. Ballantyne, Atkins, Roy and Endres were all in the mix. With three laps to go Colton got passed Hunter. Hazelton took a strong win, Colton, Hunter, Centofani & Hryniuk com­pleted the top five. In the Final, veteran racer Hazelton won the start. Hunter and Centofani fol­lowed. Hryniuk moves on Ballantyne up the hill to take fourth. Hunter started to pull in Hazelton in while Hryniuk moved to third. With five laps to go Hazelton held a three kart lead over Hunter while Hryniuk was a further 6 kart lengths behind. With two laps to go Hunter had dropped back from Hazelton and Hryniuk was in striking distance. Hryniuk dived under Hunter coming onto the straight. Hunter kept tight and the two came together allowing Pontello and Centofani to benefit. Hazelton took a well deserved win ahead of Pontello and Centofani. Hunter recovered to fourth while Hryniuk took fifth.

TaG Restricted Light
Michael Sieders was on top of his game in qualifying hitting the top of the time sheets almost im­mediately. Aaron Cogger & Manuel Velasco were also quick to get to the front. Sieders and Cog­ger held on for pole and second while Robin piped Velasco on the last lap. Johnston fifth. Heat 1 saw Sieders break a gap early while Cogger and Robin diced. Sastraprajuta (Sastrap) made his way past Velasco and John Goode. Bartley was also moving forward. Sieders took the win from Cogger and Robin. Heat 2 saw Sieders pull a gap again in the opening lap. This time Robin had the jump on Cogger. The two boxed on all race. While Velasco was racing Sastrap, Michael Bartley was on the move pulling away from Johnston, Goode and Henry Smith. Velasco and Sastrap continue to fight allowing Bartley to catch and take advantage. Sieders took the win ahead of Robin, Cogger, Velasco and Bartley. The Pre-Final was on for young and old. Sieders cleared out as in previous races. Bartley and Velasco were banging wheels. Cogger made a move on Robin coming on to the straight but Robin crossed back. Bartley tries an outside move on Velasco through Siberia. Amaz­ingly they both survive. As Barley moves to fourth Sastrap and Goode now start to chase him down. Cogger finally gets Robin for second at the end of the back straight. Further back Henry Smith passes a slowing Velasco and Johnston for seventh. In the race for P Plate honours Aaron Winchester & Stuart Quinlan come together while having a great scrap with Craig Ashwood. Sied­ers would take another win ahead of Cogger. Good race for Bartley taking third while Sastrap and Robin completed the top five. In the Final Michael Sieders continued to show his strength on cold tyres clearing out six kart lengths on lap one. Cogger, Bartley and Robin followed. Robin was all over Bartley with Sastrap close behind. By mid race it was a 5 kart battle for the minor places. Bartley's kart looked ugly but he was holding on. Bartley ran wide going down the hill allowing Robin and Sastrap to pushed through. Henry Smith was now on the tail of the group but ran out of time. Sieders took a convincing win clean sweeping the day. Cogger was a strong second. Robin third, Sastrap fourth while John Goode made it to fifth.

TaG Restricted Heavy
Series leader Benjamin Ritchie continued his good form in qualifying taking the pole by two tenths over Brett Wilson. Michael Osmond was third. Phil Warders returned to form to qualify fourth ahead of Glen Fuller. In heat 1 Ritchie took the lead ahead of Wilson while Warder slipped ahead of Osmond. Osmond soon made a move on Warder.  Ritchie took the win ahead of Wilson and Osmond while Warder just edged out Fuller. In heat 2 Ritchie took the lead ahead of Osmond. Adam Casuccio was the man on the move moving from 12th to 6th on lap one. He then made his way past Fuller and Warder. By mid race Casuccio had caught Osmond and Wilson taking them both for second. Ritchie took the win ahead of Casuccio, Osmond, Wilson and Fuller. In the Pre-Final Wilson hit the lead ahead of Osmond and Ritchie but it was not long before Osmond made a move to take the lead. Ritchie followed him. The top three were nose to tail with Ritchie looking for a move. Casuccio was also on the move. Warders had made a good start but got loose through Siberia giving Casuccio the opportunity to pass for fourth. Ritchie was now challenging Osmond for the lead but made a mistake while trying to pass allowing Wilson the chance to move to second. Wilson put the pressure on Osmond. On the last lap Osmond ran wide at the end of the back straight. Wilson and Casuccio both made moves each side of Osmond. It was three wide going into the last turn. Wilson got the win, Osmond was second, Casuccio third, Ritchie fourth and Warder fifth. For the final Osmond won the start as Ritchie dropped back to fourth. Wilson had moved to second and was starting to pull Osmond in but he had Casuccio hot on his tail as well. Ritchie would be the next to strike moving to second. Osmond was now in Ritchie’s site as he chased him down. Fuller and Warder now were in striking range of the top four. In the end Osmond was too good narrowly beating Ritchie. Casuccio came in third. Wilson was fourth and Fuller fifth. Christo­pher White was the best of the P Plate drivers finishing a creditable ninth. 

TaG Restricted Super Heavy
The Super Heavy boys were out in force again. Steve Lalas was on form in qualifying taking the pole. However Justin Bayliff had made significant inroads from round 1 closing the gap. Lee Gar­diner qualified third while Charnock and Jones were fourth and fifth. In race one Bayliff got the jump over Lalas. Lalas pushed him all the way but Bayliff took his career first race win. David Jones also moved forward to third ahead of Charnock. Lalas was back on top of Bayliff in Heat 2 but Bayliff wanted a role reversal and pushed himself as hard as he could up the back of Lalas... With only a tenth between the two it was close. Lalas first, Bayliff second, Gardner, Charnock and Jones completed the top five. The pre final was a race between Lalas and Bayliff once again. Lalas got the win. Bayliff took the fastest lap. Gardiner and Jones both showed good pace finishing close to the front two. In the final Lalas got the start. Bayliff tried to cross back out of turn one but could not quite get through. Gardiner slid through to third. Jones and Charnock came together at the end of the straight securing Gardiner’s podium. In the end Lalas was too fast, taking a strong win ahead of Justin Bayliff. Lee Gardiner took a comfortable third. Charnock and Jones recovered for fourth and fifth.
