Mawson Doubles Up At Rotax Nationals

press release

Joseph Mawson has continued his domination of Junior MAX racing throughout 2011 with a stellar performance that saw him claim a double victory at the Australian Rotax Nationals over the weekend.

Undefeated for the year, the Fujitsu Cool pilot won both the Light and Heavy divisions at the event held at Geelong’s Beckley Park Raceway.

The victory in the Light division is Mawson’s sixth straight win in a Rotax promoted event, convincingly earning him the right to represent Australia at the Rotax World Final in Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates on November 19-26.

Driving an Australian-made Arrow kart, Mawson’s win also earned him the third National Championship crown of his career and the top spot in the National Rotax Rankings for 2011.

“This year has been unbelievable in Rotax and to finally get the Rotax National Title feels amazing as it is the one I have been chasing but to also walk away with the Heavy class victory is a great bonus and I couldn’t be happier,” said Mawson.

“I can’t wait to race against the world’s best and the run I have been having in Rotax has given me great confidence with this weekend only boosting that, I will be heading to the World Final with the aim of bringing home the victory for myself and Australia.”

The Kart 1 backed 15 year-old from Hinchinbrook in New South Wales was clearly the best performer in the J-MAX Light division and was rarely headed throughout the weekend, winning two of the three heats before leading almost the entire way in both the pre-final and 30-lap Championship final.

Mawson endured a slightly tougher task in the J-MAX Heavy class after failing to finish the pre-final he had to charge through from seventh on the grid in the final but quickly found the lead on lap six. His competition didn’t end there, an intense battle with Reece Bloomfield that eventually saw Mawson greet the chequered flag first.

“To win all but one race in Lights was good as it was against some great competition however I was a little disappointed when I unfortunately ran off in the wet pre-final in the Heavy class.  Luckily I had the pace to still win the final after starting back from my lucky seven grid,” Mawson continued.

“I have to say there are a lot of people I need to thank for this weekend starting with my mechanic Shayne Piper along with Fujitsu Cool, Arrow, Kart 1, Kart X, Bell Helmets, RADeigns, Ben George’s R360, the Saller family and Troy Farley for the use of the engine plus IKD, Rotax and Geelong for putting on a great event.”

Mawson’s next contest will be the New South Wales State Championships held at the Newcastle Kart Club followed by the final round of the CIK Stars of Karting Series where he currently sits second in the points.
