TaG Super Series, Round 3

Rounds 3 of the 2011 TaG Super Series was held last Sunday at Wollongong. It was another spectacular event with big fields and awesome racing.

Many Thanks to the Wollongong Kart Club for another well run event.

TaG 125 Restricted Light

Restricted Light was once again out in full force and the battle was tight up the front. Aaron Cogger took pole position, two hundredths ahead of Kyle Sandona. Series leader Michael Sieders was third while Robin and Johnston capped out the top five.

Heat 1: Sandona hit the lead followed by Robin while Cogger slipped to third.. Cogger soon passed Robin back and set off after Sandona while Sieders added pressure to Robin. Further back in the field there was a three wide, two deep battle involving Cole­man, Menzies, Bennett, Velasco, Murphy and Yokom. With three laps to go Cogger caught and passed Sandona for the win. Sieders fought off Robin for third.

Heat 2: Kyle Sandona had another great start to lead the opening laps over Cogger and Robin. Sieders & Hazouri also made good starts. By mid race Cogger had taken over the lead from Sandona. Henry Smith was working his way through the field. John Goode was also fast. Cogger took the win ahead of Sandona and Robin. Henry Smith stormed to fourth. Sieders and Goode not far behind.

Heat 3: Supplied plenty of action . Sandona hit the lead while Cogger was knocked back to 11th. Hazouri had managed to move to second but had plenty of pressure from Mark Robin. Robin managed to get ahead but Hazouri came back. Sandona took the win. Ha­zouri and Robin were second and third. Sieders and Johnston rounded out the top five.

Pre Final: The pre final was an extension of the day long battle between Sandona & Cog­ger. Sandona hit the lead ahead of Cogger and Jones. John Goode went out after a first corner incident but managed to continue. Sieders was all over Jones looking to make a move. By mid race Cogger made a move on Sandona at the end of the straight. Mean­while the battle between Jones, Sieders and Henry Smith was beginning to heat up. Fur­ther back it was on for young and old between Godina, Bennett, Bartley and Yokom run­ning three wide through turn one and two. Jones made the move on Sieders for third while Cogger pulled a two kart lead over Sandona. Henry Smith was now adding pressure to Jones as Sieders began chasing down the top two. Henry Smith made a move on Ben Jones but Jones got him back. Cogger took a strong win over Sandona. Sieders did well for third. Jones held out Henry Smith for fourth.

Final: Kyle Sandona hit the lead followed by Aaron Cogger, Jones and Sieders. Henry Smith slipped back to fifth just in front of Johnston. Henry Smith started to cover a fast moving Johnston behind him. While Sieders was pushing Jones for third. On lap five Cog­ger caught and passed Sandona at the end of the straight. Jones still held down third ahead of Sieders. Further back Godina, Bennett, Bartley were having a great race with Robin who had slipped back at the start. Bartley unfortunately dropped a chain. Michael Sieders was next to strike passing Ben Jones for third. Jones appeared to be fading as he fell into the clutches of Henry Smith with three laps to go. Henry Smith made the move into canteen corner securing third. Aaron Cogger took the win however after the race a irregularity was found disqualified him. This elevated Kyle Sandona as round three win­ner. Michael Sieders was second. Henry Smith finished third. Ben Jones held on for fourth while El Hazouri drove well to get through to fifth.   

Sportsman/TaG 125 Heavy

Qualifying for TaG 125 Heavy was as close as usual. Hunter performed his usual fast out the gate strategy taking the pole on lap two. David Endres showed fantastic speed to move to second ahead of Piper. Hryniuk then put in a hot lap but it was not good enough to beat Hunter. Hunter: pole, Hryniuk: second,
David Endres: third, Colton: fourth and Pontello: fifth.

Heat 1: Hunter hits the lead while Hazelton dive bombs the field pushing the others wide. Hunter pulled a healthy lead while Colton held down third. Hryniuk was trying hard to make moves but Colton was making him work for it. Hryniuk finally made the move at the end of the straight. Colton tried to cross back but then dropped a chain. Meanwhile Vic Roy, Ballantyne, Bail and Aoun were having a huge battle to secure fifth place. Hunter took a 12 kart win over Hazelton. Hryniuk closed on second but had to settle for third. Pontello was fourth while Vic Roy impressed with fifth.

Heat 2: Jason Hryniuk finally made a decent start beating Hunter to the first turn. On lap three Hazelton and Hunter came together at the end of the straight. Hunter survived but went back to last while Hazelton retired. This opened the door for Colton and Mathew En­dres to chase down the Fireball driver. Pontello took Endres for third while Colton closed the gap on Hryniuk. Hryniuk takes the win from Colton and Pontello. Mathew & David En­dres take fourth and fifth respectively.
Kris Bail was sixth while Alex Taylor showed improved speed for seventh.

Heat 3: Hunter got another good start to take the lead. Tresidder was not so lucky looping it on lap one. Hunter once again started to pull a gap over Hazelton while Hryniuk sat close behind in third. Pontello had moved to fourth but was now under fire from Mathew Endres. Endres quickly made the move into fourth. Kris Bail was the fast mover of the race adding pressure to Colton. At the end Hunter took the win ahead of Hazelton, Hryniuk, Endres & Pontello.

Pre Final: Pontello made a huge start in the pre final to take the lead ahead of Hryniuk. Mat Endres slotted into third. Hunter was soon on the move taking Endres for third. Pon­tello was holding his lead.
The kart was loose but it was still fast holding the gap back to Hryniuk & Hunter. Hazelton gave Mat Erdres a shuffle into pit corner which allows him to get past. Meanwhile Hryniuk gets himself within striking range of Pontello and makes the move at the end of the straight but the move is too deep allowing Pontello to cross back. The top three were then nose to tail with Hunter now looking to take Hryniuk. In the end Pontello took a well-earned win ahead of Hryniuk. Hazelton, Hunter and Endres completed the top five.

Final: The final of TaG Heavy had all the ingredients to be the race of the day. Joshua Pontello’s speed shined at the right end of the day starting pole ahead of Hryniuk. Series leader Adam Hunter would start from the second row. As the lights went green Pontello and Hryniuk went into turn one side by side. Hryniuk received a hit from behind that put him into the fence and ended his race. Pontello also got pushed back. Adam Hunter posi­tioned his kart nicely to turn the first corner in the lead. Pontello was pushed back to third and now had to fend off Mathew Endres. As Hunter extended his lead Centofanti and Piper engaged in a fight for fifth. Piper and Balantyne displayed how rubbing is racing as they fought for a top five finish. In the end Hunter took a convincing win ahead of Hazel­ton. Pontello slipped to third. Mathew Endres edged out Centofanti for fourth.

Sportsman / TaG 125 Light

In qualifying Hewitt and Sultana were first out the gate with clear air. Erdmann was first to strike with the fastest time however Sultana and Hewitt soon hit back. Next it was Farrel to hit the top of the sheets. Series leader Matt Erdmann got stuck in traffic as Centofanti and pretty boy Wilson move into the top five. Hewitt piped Farrell on the last lap for the pole. Erdmann was third while Centofanti and Wilson for fourth and fifth respectively.

Heat 1: Hewitt hit the lead followed by Erdmann and Farrell. Erdmann pressured Hewitt having a look at the end of the straight but could not complete but Hewitt managed to hold the outside line. By lap 5 Erdmann had managed to make the move stick at the end of the straight on Hewitt with Farrell right on their tail. Sultana and Attard were now in the mix as they had caught Farrell. Further back Ferraro had managed to work his way through the field passing Nipperess for seventh on the last lap. Erdmann would take a close win from Hewitt and Farrell. Sultana and Attard were fourth and fifth. 

Heat 2: Hewitt hit the lead closely followed by Erdman, Farrell and Wilson. Erdmann made a move on lap two for the lead but Hewitt hit back going into canteen corner. Erd­mann attacks again down the straight to take the lead. The top four were nose to tail. Wil­son hit the ripple strip onto the straight costing him valuable time. Sultana, Attard and Nip­peress now started to pull in Pretty Boy Wilson. Out front Hewitt was continuing to push Erdmann. Erdmann covered going into canteen corner on the last lap. Hewitt tried to cross back but to no avail. Erdmann wins ahead of Hewitt. Farrell third, Wilson managed to hold out Sultana.

Heat 3: Hewitt once again won the start although this time it was Farrell who followed him through ahead of Erdmann & Attard. Attard’s kart looked loose as Hewitt pulled away from Farrell. Erdmann moved to second but was now six kart lengths behind Hewitt. As Farrell and Attard began dicing with Centofanti. Erdmann caught and passed Hewitt. Farrell edged away from Centofanti as Attard was knocked back down the field. Erdmann took the win over Hewitt. Farrell cleared out from Centofanti. Ferraro narrowly beat Sultana for fifth.

Pre Final: Erdmann hits the lead followed by Hewitt and Sultana. Farrell, Wilson, Nipper­ess and Dowton all crash on the first turn and are out.  On lap three Hewitt made a move on Erdmann. Sultana also looks ready to strike. Ferraro fends off a speedy Attard. Hewitt still holds the lead but only just ahead of Erdmann. The two start to pull a gap over Sul­tana who is still being hounded by Attard. On lap five Erdmann slides it in on Hewitt at the end of the straight. However Hewitt cross’s back with better traction to take the lead again.  The next lap Erdmann makes the move again past Hewitt. This time he holds mid turn to keep the lead. One lap later Hewitt makes another pass on Erdmann, this time coming onto the straight. Erdmann instantly strikes back at the end of the straight. All the dicing allows Sultana & Ferraro to catch the leaders.  With two laps to go Ferraro takes Sultana for third. With one lap to go the top five are still dicing heavily. Erdmann gets a narrow win over Hewitt. Equally Ferraro only just beat Sultana & Attard. Rannard finally starts to show some pace moving to sixth.

Final: Erdmann takes the lead. Hewitt second, Attard third. Ferraro quickly moved to third, Sultana followed him through into fourth.. Erdmann started to pull a gap on Hewitt while Attard snared third back from Ferraro. However Ferraro was not finished, planting his kart beautifully up the inside at the end of the main straight. Further back David Jolly came together with Kingsley Hussey. Jolly managed to keep going. Hussey was left facing the wrong way. The next kart through was Farrell who could not avoid Hussey.  Farrell’s nose cone went under Hussey almost rolling him over the back of his kart. While the two were trying to untangle themselves leaders Erdmann and Hewitt almost hit them when they came around.

The incident allowed Hewitt to close the gap on Erdmann. Hewitt was now on Erdmann’s tail with only a few laps to go. Erdmann now head down in pushing every bit out of the kart trying to hold Hewitt at bay. Ferraro was still leading Attard while Suter was working hard to hold out Centofanti for the top six. On the last lap Hewitt was throwing everything he had at Erdmann. As they turned onto the straight Hewitt drops a chain. Erdmann took the win. Ferraro in elevated to second. Attard takes a solid third. Hewitt limps across the line for fourth. David Sultana finished fifth.    

TaG Restricted Heavy

In Qualifying Tony Bregonje was the first to hit the top of the time sheets. Ben Ritchie was next to go fastest followed by Phil Warder. However Bregonje went faster again and took the pole. Ritchie was second. Casuccio was third while Fuller and Warder were fourth and fifth.

Heat 1: Bregonje hit the lead followed by Casuccio. Ritchie and Levy looked ready to pounce. By lap three Richie made his move coming onto the back straight to move to sec­ond. As Richie set off after Bregonje Cassuccio was keeping Levy at bay while Warder began to catch. With two laps to go Warder was all over Levy but could not make the move. Bregonje took the win ahead of Richie. Casuccio, Levy and Warder completed the top five while Robertson was sixth.

Heat 2: Casuccio won the start ahead of Bregonje and Glen Fuller. However the race was soon stopped due to an accident between Bakota and Avramidis. After the restart Bre­gonje got back into the lead ahead of Casuccio. Warder moved up to third with Ritchie on his tail. Bregonje started pulling away from Casuccio while Warder was catching. On the last lap Warder slides it in on Casuccio at the end of the straight. Casuccio cross’s back and challenges into pit corner. Bregonje crosses the line first ahead of Warder and Casuc­cio. Ben Ritchie and Glen Fuller were fourth and fifth.

Heat 3: Ben Ritchie took the lead on lap one but it was not long before Bregonje snatched the lead back at the end of the straight.  At this stage Bregonje, Ritchie & Casuccio started to pull away from Levy & Fuller. With three laps to go Casuccio made a move for second on Ritchie coming onto the straight.  However Ritchie passed him straight back by the end of the straight. Levy and Fuller were still battling for fourth. This was allowing Warder to close. On the last lap Ritchie somehow managed to get close enough to Bregonje at the end of the straight to make a move. Cassuccio follows him through. Bregonje tries to come back going into canteen corner but to no avail. Ben Ritchie took a good win ahead of Casuccio. Bregonje third. Levy fourth with Fuller on his tail for fifth. 

Pre Final: Bregonje hits the lead with Warder slotting into second. Ritchie sitting in third ahead of Fuller. By mid race Bregonje had pulled a twenty kart lead and Warder was un­der extreme pressure from Ben Ritchie. Ritchie made a move on Warder. Warder tried to pass back but Ritchie held on. Ritchie , Warder and Fuller were now nose to tail while Levy had broken away from Bakota. Bregonje takes a good win ahead of Ritchie, Warders and Fuller. Levy just held out a last minute attach from Peter Price for fifth.

Final: Bregonje once again took the start. Ritchie slotted into second. Phil Warder was third ahead of Fuller & Levy. Levy moved ahead of Fuller and then made a move on Warder. Warder managed to cross back and take back third. Fuller tried to take advantage of the situation moving around the outside of Levy in pit corner but can’t make the move stick. Bregonje now held a two kart length lead over Ritchie. Warder was holding down third but Levy was only two kart lengths behind him. As we hit midway through the final Ritchie had now caught Bregonje. Ritchie made a move for the lead going into pit corner, the two make contact but the move comes off. With only a few laps to go Warder had cleared Levy and Fuller for third as those two continued to tussle. Fuller comes back to take Levy at the end of the straight. Casuccio who was on a charge from the back also passed Levy. Ritchie took a three kart win over Bregonje. Warder took a strong third ahead of Fuller and Casuccio. 

TaG Restricted Super Heavy

The Super Heavy boys were back and the competition was heating up between these boys.
In qualifying Steve Lalas took another great pole ahead of Justin Bayliff. Gardiner and Charnock continued their battle for podium honours qualifying only a few hundredths apart. Paul Harris was welcomed back to the series in fifth.

Heat 1: Lalas turned the corner first ahead of Bayliff and Gardiner. Lalas pulled a healthy lead to take the win. Bayliff, Gardiner & Charnock had a good race and all finished close.

Heat 2: Bayliff got a great start around the outside and took the early lead. Charnock also made a good start from the inside stealing second from Lalas and Gardiner. Harris was also in hot pursuit. Bayliff opened a good lead while Lalas negotiated with Charnock. La­las managed to take Charnock. He then chased down Bayliff to take the win. Gardner edged out Harris while Charnock slipped to fifth.

Heat 3: A close race. Bayliff won the start and held the lead for the opening laps. By mid race Lalas had taken the lead and continued on to win the race. The top five finished six seconds apart with Bayliff taking second ahead of Gardiner, Charnock and Harris.

Pre Final: A repeat of heat one with Bayliff taking the start and leading the opening laps. Charnock was also hot on the heels of Lalas who held down second. By mid race Lalas had once again caught Bayliff and took the win. Bayliff second and Charnock third. Harris moved ahead of Gardiner for fourth.

Final: Bayliff made another big start leading Lalas into the first turn. Charnock and Harris also got ripper starts ahead of Gardiner. Bayliff tried to make a gap on Lalas while negoti­ating the R Heavy traffic but could not get away. Lalas made the move & took the lead on lap three. Meanwhile Gardiner had made the move on Harris for fourth. While Gardiner, Harris & Charnock continued their three kart fight as Lalas broke away from Bayliff. Gar­diner then made the move to third taking Charnock. Lalas took another win, Bayliff was second. Gardiner finished third ahead of Charnock and Harris.
