Kart Racers Aiming High At Albany This Weekend

Western Australia’s best kart racers will converge on the Great Southern region of the state this week to compete in the 2011 Nash Bros. Western Australian Sprint Kart Championships hosted by the Albany City Kart Club.

A total of 230 entries across 16 categories for the prestigious event.  One of the largest categories will be the Midgets class where drivers between 7 and 10 years of age will take to the circuit, 23 of these little ‘pocket rockets’ will be competing.

While winning is the focus on the weekend, for these youngster the sport of karting is about teaching them about driving techniques and car control well before they are old enough to obtain their road licence.

Some of the more experienced drivers in the Midgets class include Brock Kenny and Sam Dicker, both who have competed interstate on a number of occasions.

The largest field of the weekend is the Junior National Light category where 25 drivers, featuring both boys and girls, will line up on the grid – including Darwin drivers Brodie Green and Bryce Fullwood.

No less than twenty drivers from the Albany region will be competing in the event, including the father and son combination of Anthony and Mitchell Perrella.  Anthony will line up in the Clubman Super Heavy category while young Mitchell will compete in the Rookies class.

“This weekend has been the result of the hard work of a lot of people in the Albany City Kart Club and I’m really looking forward to having a great event,” said Anthony Perrella.

“For sure, I’ll be out there to win but at every state championship the competition is very tough.  The main thing is that everyone has a great time, especially the visitors, as that way they’ll all want to come back to visit our great city.”

Practice for the event begins tomorrow (Wednesday) ahead of qualifying and the opening heat races on Friday.  The racing will continue on Saturday with the championship finals being contested on Sunday.

The Albany City Kart Club is located on the Albany Highway, just south of the Airport.
