Rotax Racers Converge On Canberra This Weekend

press release

Michael Stewart ready for hometown success

More than one hundred kart racers from various parts of the country are heading to Canberra to compete in the opening event on the 2011/2012 Rotax Pro Tour this weekend.

The drivers, ranging in age from 13 to well over 40 years of age, will all be competing aboard 125cc Rotax-powered karts which will reach speeds in excess of 100km/h around the Fairbairn Park circuit.

Michael StewartFor a number of the drivers, this weekend’s event will be their final hit out on Australian soil before they embark on an overseas journey to compete in the ‘Olympic Games of karting’ – the Rotax Max Challenge Grand Finals – at Al Ain in the United Arab Emirates next month (November 19-26).

One such driver is Bywong resident Michael Stewart (right, AF Images/Budd pic). The event will be Stewart’s first race overseas and he’s got his sights set on victory on his home track this weekend before taking on the world’s best in November.

Stewart will line up in the highly-competitive Rotax Light division this weekend, it will be only his second start in the category since graduating from the junior ranks earlier this month.

“I’m feeling pretty confident entering this weekend and hopeful that I can mix it with the top drivers from around the country,” said Stewart.

“Moving into the senior ranks is a big step from juniors, it’s a very different style of racing. I was very nervous going into my first event earlier this year but this weekend I’m feeling no pressure.”

While he’s focused on this weekend, Stewart has already got his sights set on the World Final where there will be 72 drivers in his category, his number one aim will simply be to qualify for the main event.

“Six years ago when I started racing karts I never would have thought that I’d have the opportunity to race on the world stage,” said Stewart.

“It’s a great achievement to get there, now my next aim is to be one of the top 36 drivers who will be starting in the final.”

Stewart is supported in his racing by local Canberra businesses Berco Engineering and Fyshwick Cement, along with JT Motorsport and Pacific KartSport.

Practice will be held on Friday ahead of qualifying and the heat races on Saturday. The pre-final and finals will be contested on Sunday.

The Fairbairn circuit is the home of the Canberra Kart Racing Club and located on Pialligo Avenue, Pialligo.
