Mt Gambier's February Kart Races

from Donna Fleming

The first meet for the 2012 season was a great success and attracted a better than average field with the Festival State Cup just weeks away; many drivers took the opportunity to race as part of their season preparation.

Drivers kept their wet weather gear packed safely away with only a few drops of rain that dampened the track early on in the morning.

25 Drivers over 7 classes entered in the meet with Junior National Light kicking off the day’s racing with very competitive and close racing which saw local drivers Morgan Feast take out first, Joel Robinson second and Callan Belmonte third.  In fourth place Josh Munn, another local driver, came out in front of drivers Rylie Buik and Jackson Freer from Adelaide.

Rookies was won by MGKC’s Shane Moreland and second place was Thomas Buik from Adelaide, Moreland showing great improvement from last season and looks set to have a solid season.

Cadets was won by Adelaide driver Jackson Rees and MGKC Troy Moreland hot on his heels in second place.

Sportsmen Restricted Light had some tight racing but John D’Onghia had a good day taking out first place, Neill Baker came in second and Ashley Lear in third.  Scott Moreland had his first drive as a senior and came in fourth place ahead of Jayme Whitehead, who has returned after some time away from Karting.

Senior National Light had one entrant Jamie Weston who is looking for anyone to take up the challenge in his class.

Junior National Heavy was a tight contest with Sam Baker winning first place, Conor Williams in Second from Adelaide and third place was Brad Saffin.

Sportsman Restricted Heavy had a solid field which saw mixed results throughout the day but first place was taken out by Kelvin Moreland, second went to Jesse Batson and third was Glenn Henley.

Following a successful come and try session following last year’s race day’s the Mount Gambier Karting Club once again gave opportunity to interested persons to have a “go” under the watchful eye of Committee Member’s.  With one keen lad taking up the challenge this gave him a great opportunity to see what racing is all about.

A BBQ tea was held before presentations Officiated by President Neill Baker to finish off the day’s proceedings.

One meeting is left before the Festival State Cup in March so preparations are underway.  A big season is anticipated with the South Australian Closed Championship later in the year.

Mr Baker invited past and present Members of the Mount Gambier Karting Club who were interested to assist with all preparation and running of meetings.
