Australasian Kart Titles At Mildura

from Doug Garsed

The Mildura Kart Club  hosted the 2012 Australasian Kart Titles on behalf of the Goulburn Valley Kart Club and it attracted some 125 entries, including four lady racers.

The meeting started with practice on Friday in very trying conditions with a good old Mallee dust storm blowing in as drivers were trying to get the best out of their karts with different setups.

Saturday was time for racing in much better weather. Two qualifying sessions determined the grid starting positions for the first two heats, the first of which was run in the afternoon and the 2nd heat that night under the brightly lit Mildura circuit. All the drivers were rapt in how good the lights were.

The pressure of an Australasian Title was showing as two drivers in separate incidents rolled their kart while pushing very hard for any advantage.

Some of the leaders at this stage were Dylan Hollis in Rookies, Blaine Grills in Junior Max, Leigh Cocker in Clubman Heavy, Greg Mattschoss in Sportsman Restricted Light and Danial Price in Sportsman Light.

The pre-finals and finals were run on Sunday in perfect Mildura weather. The results of the pre-final were much the same as the heats with one exception; Greg Mattschoss received a 10-second penalty for jumping the start in Sportsman Restricted Light, pushing him down the field to thirteenth.

The finals were no place for the faint hearted as karts were diving into any gap that appeared, and some venturing off the track, but generally the karts at the front all weekend ended up at the front in the end. See Results below.

The Mildura Kart club would like to sincerely thank the Goulburn Valley Kart Club for choosing them as their preferred venue and having the confidence in them to run the meeting to an exceptionally high standard. They would also like to thank all the volunteers who made the event work so well.

  • The Mildura club's next Open meeting will be the 40th edition of the annual Northwest Victorian Titles, to be held at the venue on June 9 and 10. A link to the Supp Regs is on the Race Calendar page.
