Tasmanian Rising Stars & Ian Harrington Memorial

from Eammon  O'Connor

The Tasmanian winter cold did nothing to stop Tasmania’s best junior drivers converge on the AWC Kartway, to battle for the title of Tasmanian’s 2012 Rising Star and its  fantastic prize pool on June 9/10.

With a field of over eighty karters and a good crowd of spectators enjoying the winter's sun, many families travelled south to get the maximum enjoyment of the holiday weekend in Hobart. While some practiced at the track, others enjoyed the city attractions prior to the meet.

Last year’s event joint winner Tayla Heath returned with her Wyllie Tiles CC Racing Tonykart to again battle for the prize. In all we had seven red plate holders compete at the event and the best of Tasmania’s karting.  The award is judged over the weekend with racing, attitude, and sportsmanship by a selection of Tasmanian motorsport personalities.

Bright sunshine but a very cold track meant grip was at a premium and karters battled all day to get the best out of their tyres and karts.

The Cadet field was small but packed with quality, with Brock Lamont and his Corsa kart edging the field. Callum Bishop proved that he has now got the handle of his kart and was a demon with some fantastic passes throughout the day.  Jackson Callow was close all day and finish third on the day to the above two.  A  flight of young Wyllies showed that we won’t have to wait long for that name to be again in the winners list. The field is full of quality and looks good going into the run for the state title later in the year.

Rookies are always a great battle and this year again we had a battle royale. Tayla Heath looked as if she could win at will and had a metre on the followers, With only a spin in the final robbing her of a clean sweep for the weekend. Brock Evans raced well and deserved his Final win for a weekend racing followed by Heath and Zevie Eisentraut.

Junior Light was a close run affair with over a dozen racers closely fighting across the event. Nicky Richards and Bodie Reading battled closely (sometimes a little too close) over the weekend. Richards winning the Final after a race long tussle with Reading. Lachlan Newman gained a deserved third after a weekend of great pace and race craft. The rest of the field ran as a pack with Liam O’Connor running fifth until a Swiss Hutless Missile in Brad Hobden bounced his way by and used the track and kerbs to the max to record a good finish.

Junior Heavy was controlled by Morgan Jakobovski, the FA kart had close company from Daniel Newman and Thomas Clark all weekend, but had it under control to win the final in style.

“Dantoin” Evans had total control over the Senior National Field and it was great to see Josh Hardy and Peter Rogers battle over the weekend. The Crocker Brothers had versatile race Scotty Hildyard to compete with and he showed that he can race anything with wheels and an engine with speed and style. Daddy Crocker showed that he’s not slowing down and Rogers and Kuc had nothing to stop him again standing on the top step and the award presented by birthday girl Jessica Bannister. Scotty Searson and Jules Bachelor fought all weekend with less than 0.1s separating them at the finish and great sportsmanship as they helped other racers.

TAG was a Wilton event with Luke and Leroy battling each heat with no give and take.

The judges had again a very difficult time deciding who over all the junior drivers was the 2012 Tasmanian Rising Star and won the title and the very impressive Ian Harrington trophy and prizes.

And the 2012 winner was... BODIE READING.

After a wonderful display of racing and kart control in trying conditions, Bodie was a clear winner after a great day of racing and fun. Bodie now has another title to add to his previous plate wins and we hope to see him keep racing at the highest level.

The great event finished with a wonderful prize giving and BBQ raising funds for Pink Plate bound Tassie’s Fastest Ladies. The large prize pool meant that no junior went without a prize and we wish to thank all our great supporters and the STKC members.
