City of Whyalla TitlesTweetfrom David Camwell Sixty drivers turned up for this two day event, double the amount of drivers from last year. Competitors were attracted to the meeting due to the hundreds of hours of hard work the Club Committee and Members have put into the complex over the past year, with the addition of publicity, which includes the use of the local Whyalla Newspaper, posters, flyers, word of mouth, websites such as KartSportNews, Australian Karting SA and Kartbook. There were $5000 worth of trophies and prizes on offer, a free Cars jumpy castle was organized for the kids and some of the big kids (mums and dads) who just couldn’t help themselves. The bonfire Saturday night was a hit, with many people hanging around after the free draw giveaway prizes to talk about the days racing and how they were looking forward to Sundays reverse track direction of racing.
Cadets were the first class out on the track; with a field of 7 kids battling it out with some close exiting wheel to wheel racing. Jason Bowyer had a clean sweep taking out all 5 races. Conner Gowling returned to Whyalla from Adelaide to defend his title from last year, but he had to settle for second this year. Aaron Oliver, freshly off his ‘P’ plates, took out the final step on the podium for 3rd.
The Sportsman 125 light and Restricted 125 light drivers were next out on the track with both classes racing for their own class wins. The restricted drivers started a couple of kart lengths behind the unrestricted drivers. This was fantastic for the spectators with twelve 125 karts screaming around the tight Whyalla circuit.
The Sportsman Light drivers had their fair share of dramas. David Harradine was clipped from behind on the last lap of the third heat which sent David’s kart flying into the air and rolled from end to end, throwing him out of his kart onto the bitumen track. After a quick visit to the hospital, David was back at the track that afternoon with only minor bruising and soreness. His kart was not that lucky and was packed up into the trailer as it was un-drivable. Brett Fortainer took out the class win, even when he had mechanical failure in the third heat and did not finish. Johnathon Mangos had a great run and picked up second and local Dave Camwell took out third place, despite entering the class to make up numbers as he was 14kg over the class minimum weight.
Adelaide driver Jake lowe in Junior National light blitzed the field in all 5 races. Whyalla drivers Cameron Wilson and Isabella Cumerlato claimed second and third, Isabella just holding on by 1 single point from Jarred Watson. All 4 Rookies drivers were from Adelaide and these little guys and girls put on a great display of driving. Jack Hutchins had a clean sweep taking out all five wins. Tyson Harvey snapped up second place and Allison Bowyer claimed third despite not finishing the second pre-final. Jack Haverland was fourth. Clubman Light and Clubman Super Heavy hit the track as two separate classes. Adelaide driver Matt Mahar was the favourite to take out the Clubman Light class. He was pushed hard all weekend by ‘P’ plate driver Angelo Karousiss who started at the rear of the pack each race and managed to have 2 wins out of the 5 races. With Matt taking out the other 3, and only two points separating them, Matt took out first, Angelo second and Brian Watt third. Clubman Super Heavy was won by Adem Redjepi with Scott Woods second.
Unfortunately there were only two Junior Sportsman drivers as one driver pulled out at the last minute; Max Carter claimed victory over Joshua Angus second. The next class out was the Sportsman 125 Heavy and Sportsman Restricted 125 Heavy. These classes provided some close exiting wheel to wheel action - sometimes a little too close. Adem Redjepi retired from the class after the first heat with sore ribs and saved himself for his other class, Clubman Super Heavy. Dave Camwell won the first heat ahead of Dan Tasenan. The second and third heats were won by Adelaide driver Shane Wiseman. Sunday's reverse direction of racing was won by Dave Camwell. As all points count, Dave won by 1 point ahead of Shane Wiseman who was ahead of third place Dan Tasenan. Dayle Tolosa from Adelaide was at the pointy end all weekend with a couple of thirds and a second, but missed out on a podium by a couple of points.
Paul Beaty made it 4 out of 5 wins in the Restricted 125 class. Adelaide driver Steve Oliver gave Paul a hard time all weekend and both pushed themselves to their limits. Steve managed to win the first race on Sunday's reverse direction, but it was Paul first, Steve second and Adam Baker, who has improved out of sight, who took out the final position for third.
Max Carter nearly had a flawless run in Junior National Heavy, winning the three heats and pre-final, but it was Jake Lowe who took out the final. Once again all points count, so Max won on points, Jake was second and local driver Cameron Wilson, who couldn’t match the speed of the Adelaide drivers, took out third place. The last race of the day was the Sportsman SA local guys; the class was won by Darrol Jones over Aiden Sossa by 1 single point. Darrol lost control of his kart in the 3rd heat and spun out, and as he doesn’t run a clutch, that was the end of his race. Aiden also won the final just slightly ahead of Darrol after the 20 laps. Kade Lawson had a fantastic run to take out third place ahead of his brother Karl by, yet again, 1 point.
The team’s perpetual trophy award is a new incentive that the Club has introduced and is fully sponsored by Inspirations Paint on Norrie Avenue, Whyalla. The magnificent perpetual trophy will stay with the Club. There were also trophies handed out for the winners, second place and third. Points count towards the nominated classes which consist of at least 1 kid and 2 Seniors or 2 kids and 1 Senior (3 per team). Lowest accumulated points wins, 9 teams entered and it was the Whyalla team “THEBOTTLEDEPOT” taking out first place. The team consist of: 1st Cameron Wilson - Junior National Heavy
