CIK-FIA Clarifies Noise Penalty Wording

from CIK-FIA

The International Karting Commission, via a vote of its Members, is anxious to clarify the text of the rule regarding penalties applied for breaches of the authorised noise level.

Although the noise limit obviously remains set at 108 dB, a penalty of 3 places (during Qualifying Practice) or of 3 seconds (during the Qualifying Heats and final phase) will be inflicted for “up to 1 dB” (instead of “of 1 dB”) exceeding the limit.

The new text appearing below will therefore no longer leave room for interpretation and, as a reminder, will be applicable as from the next CIK-FIA events, namely the World U18 Championship and Academy Trophy, but also the World Cups for KZ1 and KZ2 scheduled for Sarno.

The new text is as follows:

G. Noise Control

In joint application with Article 2.19.1 of the Technical Regulations, if a kart exceeds the authorised noise level the following penalties will be inflicted:

During Qualifying Practice:

- penalty of 3 places for up to 1 dB exceeding the prescribed noise limit;- penalty of 6 places for excesses comprised between 1 and 2 dB beyond the prescribed noise limit;

- penalty of 9 places for excesses comprised between 2 and 3 dB beyond the prescribed noise limit;

- a Driver whose kart’s noise exceeds the prescribed noise limit by more than 3 dB will be classified last as a minimum.

During the Qualifying Heats and in the final phase:

- time penalty of 3 seconds for up to 1 dB exceeding the prescribed noise limit;

- time penalty of 6 seconds for excesses comprised between 1 and 2 dB beyond the prescribed noise limit;

- time penalty of 9 seconds for excesses comprised between 2 and 3 dB beyond the prescribed noise limit;

- a Driver whose kart’s noise exceeds the prescribed noise limit by more than 3 dB will be classified last as a minimum.

The Stewards always have the power to exclude a Driver whose infringement is over these figures and/or repetitive.

Noise controls will systematically be carried out from Non-Qualifying Practice onwards, and their results will be published for information.
