River City Titles

by Nathan Burgess

The 2012 River City Titles got off to a fiery start at Monarto with a bonfire and barbecue dinner following open practice on the Saturday night. Many competitors and crew kicked on well in to the evening, pausing only to watch the F1 qualifying, before retiring to the tents for the night.

Sunday brought with it some of the best weather we have seen for months, fine and sunny with barely a cloud in the sky. The racing was just as great all day with 4 heats and a final for a total of 46 laps keeping competitors busy.

Many competitors were using the event as one of their last opportunities for race practice on the same track as the 2013 Nationals in March next year.

Above: The Rookies class saw an intense battle in the final between Josh Montagu #99, Jacob Dowson #18 and Jordon Pianezzola $54. Unfortunately, Dowson and Pianezzola came together with two laps to go leaving Montagu to take the win from Pianezzola with Jack Hutchins just .052 behind in third.

Above: After an underweight exclusion in the pre final, Scott Taylor #59 was forced to start from the rear for the final of Sportsman 125 Heavy. His skill and determination shone through, crossing the line for a narrow victory ahead of Kristian Harris #31 and Anthony Bartel #88.

Above: Frankie Maiolo #31 was too good for the rest of the field in the final of Restricted 125 Light. Behind him, Greg Perry #43 and Heath Macfarlan#42 had a close battle for second. Macfarlan clearly had the pace and was looking to chase down the leader but a mistake cost him dearly and saw him finish right on the rear bumper of Perry who took home second.

Above: The Cadets class saw the closest battle for the weekend with Jackson Rees #11 and Cooper Hay #88 never more than a kart length apart, The crowd was on the fence for the extremely classy display of driving in the final. With only one lap to go it was Rees who lead Hay. Hay got a good run through the final sweeper but it was not quite enough with Rees taking the narrow victory. Mikey Jones finished third.
