TEKA – Round 5 Lincoln County Raceway

from Justin Sydenham

Just under thirty teams and a hundred drivers rolled up to TEKA’s round five at Lincoln County raceway, Dubbo, recently. This would be the largest number of teams we’ve seen at this event. No one would have known at this point in time that this double points round with would see major championship changes.

A number of different teams turned up on the Friday to get a head start, and simply enjoy a weekend away with family and friends doing what they love. It’s a great chance to compare notes, get tips or even drive other karts. Class leading teams would be looking for that edge to keep them ahead of those behind. The battle for outright honors sees Buildline #9 leading Dynamite #27 by 12 points. With Awesome closely following two points adrift. The two kart team of Motorvation #17 & #49 were not for a second out of the running for a podium either! On top of that, if Aussie Speed #72 gets through the weekend without mechanical dramas they have the speed to be right amongst it, taking points from several other teams. A big welcome back to Sky Racing #7 who after a long absence are also entitled to steal points from other contenders.

In B Grade the battle was truly on, before the round even begins Evermil #46 holding a slender lead over Bullit #50. RAD #58 third at the right end of the season ready to fire and securing the service of one of their number one team drivers. Palace Shakers #43 weren’t going down without a fight. The Benchwarmers not prepared to sit on the sideline contesting this round in a new kart with experienced part time driver Clint, and out of the Buildline team racing garage. And if Benders could put to bed their mechanical woe’s they’d win a bloody round.

In the Honda class Frog Racing #11 who normally can do no wrong would be aiming for a typically solid finish to consolidate. The chasers are numerous with Christ Crew #3,  SCM Racing #19 and Rubber rooster #6.

Hopetofinish #75 who’ve often looked the professional team they set out to be would love another good finish, it’ll be needed if they want to stay ahead of CDT #45 and Williams Honda #98, all separated by only 3 points.

After a perfect practice session with the fastest lap WAR in a WAR Speed would replicate the result in qualifying taking top spot, the only kart in the 54’s with a 54.94 Aussiespeed #72 had their Phoenix wound up with a great effort pulling off 2nd position under 1/10th second behind. Buidline #1 also with a 55 dead 3rd.

In B grade RAD Racing #58 drive to 1st who also managed the   4th quickest time outright! Following in 2nd and 3rd were Bullit #50 and Palace Shakers #43 who are rarely separated by much.

The Hondas saw Hellrazor #13 continue their good form taking top spot by 2/10ths followed by SCM #19 and MAD Racing #88. Team Frog #11 and Hope to Finish #75 weren’t going to be left too far behind. Christ Crew #3 and Uni Filter #33 appeared to be having some issues.

A beautiful day for a 3 hour sprint race, and after exactly 219 laps without safety kart the top three karts were separated by only 25 seconds. WAR’s reliability and speed enough to topple the two kart team of Dynamite #27 and Buildline #9 2nd and 3rd respectively.

In terms of the points battle not too much affect with Awesome Threesome #10 coming in 3rd staying in touch with the top two who were just ahead on the road.

In B grade Bullit #50 with an A grade like turn of speed throughout the race cross the line in 1st place. Palace Shakers #43 didn’t let them out of their sight following them home for 2nd position. Evermil #46 desperate to hold on to a slight class championship lead sneak into 3rd, a great drive across the team with a kart that wasn’t perfect. RAD #58 making it clear they were still very much in this championship with a 4th place.

The Honda’s saw MAD #88 finish in 1st place, a great drive holding off a fast Hellrazor #13 and the consistency of Frog #11.

One day done, and one to go! Only minor movement on the championship ladder so far, there’s definitely a lot more to come! Day two produced even better weather than the first and the racing lived up to expectations.

Although there were a couple of safety kart periods the racing was clean, the majority of drivers possibly mindful of what it takes to finish races, and I think generally a good level of respect all round.

Interestingly enough in the Honda class after 323 laps the MAD #88 Boys would for the second time in the weekend be victorious, and the only real fight for top spot would again come from Hellrazor #13. These two teams were making up a lot of ground from way back in the championship (I think after missing a round). SCM #19 a better result than the day before, and one more fitting for a team running 3rd in the championship. Team Frog #11 again consolidating their lead with 4th place points, and the good looking boys from the two kart team of Williams #98 and Formula #99 sticking together into 5th and 6th.

In the Briggs & Stratton class RAD Racing #58 lead home the rest of the B grade field with some fine driving by the teams fulltime gun John, and his last minute stand in team mate Pauly holding his own as well. RAD #58 would have appreciated the points coming from 3rd in the series only one point ahead of Palace Shakers #43.

Bullit #50 only a few seconds behind the leaders in 2nd also picked up valuable points on Evermil #46 taking the lead of the championship, with Evermil finishing further down the order with a mechanical issue. Palace Shakers #43 keep their hopes alive with a 3rd.

And the big boys (not really)???

In the B & S  A Grade class Dynamite #27 and WAR #35 would again go at, this time for a total of 336 laps…Dynamite #27 edging out WAR #35 this time for the win! Also celebrating a big points win over their teammates for the ultimate prize, 2012 Series Champions!

Team Motorvation #17 use their consistency, and add a little speed to take out 3rd place (who said Burkey couldn’t drive the new chassis, oh yeah it was Shane…fight fight fight).

Aussiespeed #72 into 4th earning a result they deserve, may have been even better aside form a late mechanical drama. Things may be coming together at the right end of the season for them, previously showing on again off again dominance. The Championship leaders also suffering from a mechanical pit stop had to make ground up coming back through the field to 5th position!

Now 2 points in it at the top of the table between team mates in the Buildline garage, then only 7 points separating Awesome Threesome #10 and Motorvation #49 in 3rd and 4th.  Then again what’s all that matter when we go to Tamworth next where the points are double double!!

See you there!
