Fourth Straight Superkart Title For Occhipinti

  26 November 2012

press release

Having just won his fourth straight Victorian Superkart Club Rotax Light Championship, Russ Occhipinti has been selected to drive in Andy Goodall’s fledgling Formula Vee team for 2013; and there are also plans to expand into the V8 KHUMO series.

In addition to the championship, Russ also won the Driver Of The Year award for the third time.

Making it more incredible, Occhipinti continued racing with a kart that is now 20 years old.

“I built the first one out of necessity as I had no budget to speak of" he said. "That chassis, as it turned out, won a national title last year in the Rotax Heavy class with Steve Milner driving, which prompted me to build another kart, an old Mac Minarelli which I re-engineered to comply with current spec vehicles.” Occhipinti said

He beat home a talented field which included Bobby Jane to claim the individual driver’s honour at a special presentation on Saturday night.

“It’s an absolute honour to win this prize again and it wouldn’t have been possible without my supporters, Woodgate racing engines, guitar house, Ace karts, the Victorian Superkart Club and Andy Goodall Training”, Occhipinti said.

“It was a long season and it’s nice to be recognized for the hard work put in by the team.”

The style with which Occhipinti wrapped up the series in the final round at Phillip Island tells the tale. It was a clean sweep as he raced home first in every race to seal his fine season.

“It was a nice way to finish,” he said. “It’s always tough to put in a whole weekend of work with the team, so to get the success in that fashion is very rewarding."

Russ is now setting his sights on Formula Vee for 2013, a drive which was offered to him by Andy Goodall. Andy has recently put together a state of the art training centre, which designs and builds its own cars.

“I have unfinished business in car racing. I was forced out of Formula Ford in 1998, because of a sever lack of funds, so to be included in Andy Goodall/'s racing team is very timely. I look forward to hopefully enjoying more success in motorsport next year”  he said.

“I would like to thank all the people at the Victorian Superkart Club for all their hard work, also all my support from Guitar House, Woodgate Racing, Ace karts, and my personal trainer, my Wife Sofia Occhipinti” said Russ.
