JV's Prepped For Asia Rotax Invitational

As mentioned in the News Briefs of  January 9, Jason Varley is heading to Sepang later this month to race in the 2015 Rotax Invitational with fellow Aussie Josh Hunt’s Energy Corse Asia team.

“It was all very much last minute, so I’m just now getting the passport and (international) licence sorted” JV told KartSportNews.

Jason has known Josh for some time – they raced against each other years ago and  still regularly bump into each doing advanced driver training at places like Eastern Creek.

“For some time he’d been telling me about this deal he was trying to put together (Energy Corse Asia)" JV said.

"We were enjoying a drink a couple of days out from Christmas and I said ‘if you need a mechanic or someone for driver coaching, let me know’. Then he said ‘Why don’t you come and driver for me?’!”

JV will compete in Senior MAX at 165kg. The class will not be using the new Evo engine and the chassis and motor will be supplied by Hunt’s team.

“He’s got all that sorted out (engines) – I’m literally turning up with my helmet.”

By the time he leaves Australia, JV will have done about a thousand laps since Christmas, “going out to Lithgow, cutting laps and just getting the fitness and my eye back in.”

“Apart from a couple of one-off meetings, it’s been just over 10 years since I raced Rotax competitively, so I need to get back on top of things like roll time, the carburettor etc. You don’t forget it, but you have to work to get it right again.

“I was racing Clubman Heavy and I weighed 94kg, so had to lose nearly 10kg to get down to the weight over there. I’m down to about 86kg at the moment, and eating cat and rabbit food to do it! I’ve also been running 5km a day in the heat as it’s going to be hot and humid over there.

JV will take 19-year old protégé Josh Buchan as his mechanic. The duo will arrive in Sepang in the wee hours of Wednesday morning next week. First practice will take place later the same day.
