Karting World Record Set In Queensland

press release 18 February 2015

Gold Coast V8 ute driver Cam Wilson and his Slideways Go Karting team were celebrating this afternoon having set a Guinness World Record at 12noon today, all in aid of Huntingtons Queensland.

Cam, with his team of Dan Tuite, Tim Harris, Danial Goddard, Chris Hinton and Nathan Roach, drove 774km (4,868 laps) to set the record for “Karting – Greatest distance travelled in 24 hours indoors (Team)”.

The average lap time was 17.72 seconds with the record set in the final hour (11am – 12noon), achieving more than 50kms over the previous target.

More than $12,500 has been raised for Huntingtons Queensland with donations still being collected via https://give.everydayhero.com/au/slideways-go-karting-gold-coast with the team hoping to raise $48,000.

Cam said the 24 hour drive was challenging, however, the attempt ran smoothly.

“I’m very proud of the team for their efforts and I’m stoked to share this success with them on this occasion,” he said.

“The attempt ran very smoothly with the go kart running faultlessly. Our changes between drivers were under three seconds, and each driver drove in 30 minutes stints with excellent and consistent lap times.”

Huntingtons Queensland Executive Officer Bernard congratulated Slideways Go Karting for the achievement.

“On behalf of more than 300 families living with Huntington’s disease in Queensland, I’d like to thank Cam Wilson, his partner Tracey and their young family and the team at Slideways Go Karting for this huge and very successful record attempt,” Mr Wilson said.

“The demand for services and support for families impacted by Huntingtons is truly enormous and we appreciate the awareness and the fundraising proceeds generated by this event.”

The attempt at Slideways Go Karting Gold Coast, Nerang was held to raise vital funds for Queenslanders impacted by Huntington’s disease, a neurological, hereditary disorder affecting a person’s ability to talk, think and move, leading to cognitive decline and mental health issues.

Cam lost his father Murray to the disease last year and lives with the 50 per cent prospect he has inherited the defective gene.

Huntingtons Queensland provided ongoing support to the Wilson family over the 10 years following Murray’s diagnosis, and Cam is determined to give back as much as he can.

Cam’s first overnight marathon record attempt in February 2014 saw him cover a total 604km at Slideways Go Karting Brisbane.

"Claiming a second world record is a bonus knowing the difference the money we raise will make to the lives of Queensland families coping with the detrimental effects of Huntington’s disease,” he said.

“The 24 hour record attempt is physically grueling and an enormous challenge but equates to nothing compared to what is experienced by those diagnosed with the condition.”

Corporate support has been exceptional and Slideways Go Karting Australia wishes to thank platinum sponsor Penrite Oil and silver sponsors Coca-Cola Amatil and SMS-Timing.
