Preview: Australian Superkart Championship, Rnd 2

press release 15 September 2015

The second and final round of the 2015 Rockpress/Coach Design Australian Superkart Championship will take place at the world famous Phillip Island Grand Prix Circuit this weekend and it promises to be one of the most thrilling and dramatic rounds in recent years with close championship points battles throughout the strong 33 kart field.

Fighting for the top honours in the 250cc International class, Kiwi-born driver Anton Stevens heads to the Island with a slim points advantage of 6 points over 15 times champion Warren McIlveen and 9 points over the ever consistent Russell Jamieson.

These three along with 4th placed Ilya Harpas and reigning 250cc International champion Gary Pegoraro will be expecting to continue their race and championship battles from Sydney Motorsport Park last July and will no doubt go down to the wire with all still a mathematical chance of holding the champions trophy aloft.

Previous national champion Jason Smith along with Victorian’s Kristian Stebbing and Marty Latta will also be amongst the leaders.

In the 250cc National class, Jordan Ford is certainly the one to watch after clean sweeping the Sydney round and setting a new lap record, but don’t count out Daniel Lewis from capitalising from any misfortune Ford may have as he’s only 12 points behind. Dale Williams and Aaron Cogger are also in the middle of a big scrap for third position in the championship and if the last meeting is anything to go by then it will be a very close fight. John Pellicano is also expected to run towards the lead with local drivers Raff Pironti and Tyler Williams joining the field for the first time.

Last and certainly not least, the spectacular 125cc National class are expected to put on another great show of racing after the last round had some spectacular overtaking and wheel to wheel racing. Mark Robin has a commanding 30 point lead over reigning class champion Gary Haywood going into the final round, with Paul Campbell and Jeff Reed breathing down Haywood’s neck as well in another tight points battle for second. Unfortunately, 5th placed Tim Philp will not be taking part in this round due to overseas work commitments but Adam Stewart debuts in a Anderson/Honda.
