Hurricane Round Closes 2016 Western Cup

by Troy Thompson 3 July 2016

The final round of WA’s four round series, the Western Cup, was run in changing weather conditions at Hurricane Go Kart Club last week. The day started with rain that kept the track wet until after midday (this put a smile on the dealers faces with wet tyre sales up). The Club did a superb job to get meeting done in a day without cutting any races short, even with the poor weather.

The racing was top class with great performances by several drivers. The luckiest would have to be TaG 125 Light driver Bailey Bell who cart wheeled but landed back in his seat and on all four wheels without any injury (same can’t be said for the chassis though). You’ll find the on board footage on YouTube or Facebook.

Driver of the day would have to be Bart Horsten who won both Junior KA4 Heavy and Junior KA3 in his Ricciardo Kart. He dominated KA4 Heavy and showed great maturity in the Jnr KA3 final (the race of the day in my opinion) where he, Damon Papasergio & Flynn Thompson raced bumper to bumper the entire race without trading paint, only 0.2 sec’s separated the three in the end.

There’s always hard luck stories in racing but one that stood out this weekend was Cadet 12 Craig Spencer’s. He knew he had to win the final to be a chance to win the series, which he did, but Max McRea had done just enough by finishing 2nd in his Arrow take the series by a meagre 26 points.

Another fantastic race was the KA3 Light final; the top 3 drivers Shae Thompson, Sam Dicker and Alex Barboutis went into the race with only 8 points separating them for the day. Alex got the early lead, then Shae took the lead on lap 8 and held it until the last lap when Sam pulled off a solid pass in his Deadly to take the win by 0.06 sec’s.

The old fella’s in KA3 Masters put on a “masterful” final where Warren Pymont, John Rae and Paul Hughes crossed the line with only 0.3 sec’s between them after 15 laps.

And finally the last close final of the day was TaG Heavy where Lewis Shugar, Ryan Barrow and Adrian Fogliani finished 0.3 sec’s apart. “Flogga” made a pass on Taylor Thomas to take 3rd on the last lap.
