British Superkart Champ To Race In Australia

press release 23 February 2017

Williams Racing is proud to announce that current British Superkart Champion Liam Morley will contest the first two rounds of the Victorian Superkart Club's State Series, and that former AFL player Jason Akermanis will return to the seat.

Morley, from Carnforth in the UK, is one of world's leading drivers having finished fourth in last years European Superkart Championship. The factory Anderson driver also dominated the British scene winning the Division 1 title plus became the first driver in history to win two classes at the British GP event - 125 Open and the Div 1 class for a second year in a row.

Interestingly Morley shared a garage at the event with local champ Jordan Ford who on the same day became the first ever Australian to win the premier 250 National class.

With a relationship forged, Williams Racing team owner Scott Williams offered Morley a chance to escape the cold of the UK and get race fit before the British season which starts in late March. With temperatures near zero at home, the opportunity to race in Australia was quickly accepted.

Morley will race the opening round at Winton before taking on the Phillip Island GP circuit for round two.

"I’m really looking forward to getting downunder. There’s no racing here for a few weeks and its an exciting opportunity" stated Liam.

"Jordie’s very quick and it will be good to get some race miles under the hat, plus work on my tan at the same time."

Morley will run an identical Anderson chassis, with Yamaha power as Ford so it will be interesting to gauge each others competitiveness. "Unoffical battle for the Ashes" laughed Morley.

Owner Williams enthused "It’s exciting to have a driver of Liam’s caliber out here competing. Jordie has been dominant the last few seasons so it will be good to see them in equal machinery. We hope he likes it out here, the prospect of him coming back for the Festival of Superkarts in August might be on the cards."

In more exciting news, Jason Akermanis will also join the team for the first round. Aker previously drove for the team in the 2013/14 seasons where he ran second in the Australian Championship and took home the AASA Nationals before football coaching commitments stopped his racing. All three drivers will test on the Friday at Winton to get the best set up. Let the battle begin.

This campaign would not be possible without the generous support of Dunlop Kartsport Australia and its dk17.com.au online superstore, Burbank Homes, Anderson Karts, Slipstream Signs, C4 Racing Oils, Powerflow and Carnforth Exhaust Centre.
