SunX TaG R Kart Tour, Round 1

by Simon Kendrick 30 March 2017

In early 2017 January Tag R Medium racer Nick Crawshay decided to put together a bunch of races for the group of racers in TaG Restricted class in NSW based on good old fashioned fun.

The concept was to run 4 races at local club race meetings using only 2 sets of tyres.  New tyres for Round 1 with Round 2 using the same tyres; Then new for round 3 and those same tyres used in Round 4.

The idea was embraced well by the karting community with 36 drivers turning up to run in both classes at the Picton kart track hosted by the Wollongong Kart Racing Club on the weekend.  22 x Tag R Light and 14 x Medium racers lined up on the out-grid to provide the largest field for the day.

TaG Restricted Medium

Chris Nobbs in the Troy Farley race engines powered Tony Kart set the fastest time in qualifying to secure pole position for heat 1 & 2 with a 31.304 narrowly edging out Jeremy Atkins and Shane Tate for pole position.

In Heat 1 though, Nick Crawshay showed the class of the field to work his way to the front and drive to a 1.2 sec win over Mitch Nobbs.  Mitch got the better of Crawshay in Heat 2, however It was close racing for the remainder of the day as Crawshay put in a dominant performance holding off a mid race charge from Mitch Nobbs followed by his father, Chris Nobbs a few tenths behind in 3rd place.

TaG Restricted Light

TaG R Light fielded the largest class with 22 entrants. Stephen Donley (Conceptual interiors) put it on pole during qualifying to lead the young fella Logan Dockett (PCR karts Australia/ F45 Corrimal) and Greg Holden on the 2nd row.

Donley held off the surge from the PCR kart team of Dockett and Payne in the first 2 heats with Dockett taking the ascendancy in Heat 3. Unfortunately Donley sustained a muscle injury in Heat 4 ruling him out for the remainder of the day. This left the door open for Logan Dockett and Jared Payne to convincingly win the Prefinal and set the day up for a thrilling final.

The top 4 of Payne, Dockett, Schiller and Kendrick were closely grouped for the first 5 laps with Payne taking the lead on lap 5 and no-one could catch the PCR duo of Payne and Dockett as they powered their way to a 1-2 victory. Simon Kendrick rounded out the podium in 3rd place setting fastest lap in the final.

Round 2 of the SunX TaG Restricted Kart Tour is on April 29th at Manning Valley as a part of their monthly race meeting.  With a Prize pool valued at over $1000 per round, another four sets of Dunlop DFM tyres are up for grabs in both Tag R Light and Medium classes with support of the good people at Dunlop Kartsport.
