NSW Speedway Karts, Round 1

from Wayne Baines 20 February 2013

During the week leading into Sunday’s Round 1 of the 2013 Championship season for the members of the NSW Speedway Kart Club , mother nature tried everything she could to replicate the 2012 season where she claimed four race dates from the Club.  However, with rain all week - even as late as Saturday night -  the Club spirit of the members present made them determined not to start the season with a rain out.

After some reorganisation of the pit area (with everyone pitching in) and the late start, the meeting turned into one of the best day’s racing seen at the venue. The track was superbly prepared providing a fast racy surface for the drivers.

Most classes were very close to the track records and two drivers, Jake Donaldson (Junior) and Greg Bignall ( KT Modified ), both went home recording quick time.

Results from the racing showed two drivers were dominate in their classes, both winning  4 from 4 races, and they have sent warnings to their fellow drivers that this year they will be very difficult to beat. Clubman Heavy driver Matt Elliott and Cadet driver Connor Moreau were a class above the other drivers, sending them all home to do some home work to find speed for Round 2.

A number of drivers also picked up a personal best result for the meeting.  The Cadet class saw Payton Coghlan pick up her first podium with a 3rd place;  the Rookie class saw first time driver in the class, Luke Geering, come home 3rd;  Katelyn Hickey, moving from the Junior class in her first Senior race, placed an impressive 2nd in Clubman Light whilst another driver from the Junior class, Jordan Binskin, won his first feature race in the Senior class.

The Clubman Heavy class saw another first with Anthony Eason claiming his first podium result  with a 2nd place. The highly competitive KT Modified class saw two young ladies, Amy Shute, straight from the Junior class, finish 3rd and Ashleigh Jack (who raced Clubman last year), in her first race meeting in the class, took home the 2nd place trophy.
