Vic Superkarts Round 3, Winton

Superkarts made a return to Winton last Sunday for the Victorian Superkart Club Round 3, this time taking to the long circuit. Winton unfortunately had a rather nasty bump on the entry to turn one which made for an interesting ride in a machine with no suspension at well over 170 kph.
Thanks to the people at Winton, this has been fixed and away we went. The 250s saw a small but dedicated group all with a mixed bag of issues throughout the day. Gary Pegoraro took the wheel of Jason Akermanis’s kart to sort some issues while Jason’s team mate Dale Williams had a day of issues himself, while reliability paid dividends for Scott Appledore to take out the day.

A large field of 125 Gearbox took to the track again and turned on the best racing for the day. An incident during race two saw Robert Xerri greet the tyre wall with Robert coming away unscathed other than some bruises.
Sydneysider Sam Zavaglia showed the field a clean set of heels in his stock Honda with some great hard driving. Bobby Jane (son of Bob) made a return in his KZ2 kart but suffered from his share of issues. Further astern from the leader a host of drivers jostled for position while Stephen Castles did his best to chase down Zavaglia.
In Non Gearbox Light (Rotax) it was Russ Occhipinti again with a straight set win however not all that far behind was Tim Clarke who has moved to the senior ranks this year. A dropped chain in race three dashed any chances for him on the podium. Slightly further back Dallas Brooks and Barry Thomas were fighting over what was left on the podium. Fifty odd meters back the Heavies were into it, Jamie MacDonald showed some pace by not giving away a weight to horsepower ratio as he did last year as a junior and mixed it well with Rod Clarke and Jason Akermanis who jumped in to a Rotax kart while Gary Pegoraro drove his 250. Jason had football commitments later that day so his kart was handed over to Scott Williams hence the double #22 in the results.
The next round of the Victorian Superkart Club series will be held on June 14 at the Phillip Island Grand Prix circuit.
