The Shamick Karting Information Night

  17 June 2013

Melbourne-based Shamick Racing ran a karting information night at its Campbellfield workshop earlier this month. Eighty-five people attended the evening; a mix of existing karters, newbies and people looking to get involved in the sport.

“It was a very good turnout” Shamick Racing’s Brett Hughes told KartSportNews. “I can’t recall anyone else having done something like this.”

Hughes had prepared a comprehensive PowerPoint presentation, which included the basics of getting into the sport, joining a club and the things you need to start, through to the fundamentals of kart setup.

“When we got to items like camber and caster, we got a few blank looks, but they all got a 20-page booklet explaining a lot of different things and listing various resources, so they got to take some knowledge away with them.”

“We had some of our drivers there, so we were able to break them off with people who know what they’re doing. So if someone had questions about an Arrow, Klunka (Adam Klunyk) was here to answer those, and I was able to answer questions about the CRG range.”

The session started at 5:30pm and the last people left around 10pm. “We put on a barbeque and drinks for general chit chat, the kids were talking with the kids, all the adult were talking, it was a good night.”

Will there be another info night? There certainly will!

“We had to see how this first one was going to go first, and we had to build this from scratch" Hughes explained.

"We might do one of these each quarter, and I'm thinking the next one will be a more technical night where we’ll bring in some experts to talk. For example, having an engine builder here to show how to rebuild a carburettor, or a tyre person explaining tyre pressures."
