Competitors in the youngest category of Australian karting, Cadets, will lead the way to the Northern Territory Championships to be hosted by the Darwin Karting Association this weekend.
If last weekend’s Queensland State Championships in Bundaberg are anything to go by, the young drivers aged between 7 and 11 years old will be out to put on a show as they battle for the prestigious blue plate awarded to the champion.

Last weekend, it was Sydney driver Benito Montalbano who emerged as the victor in a sensational race that saw the youngsters battle wheel to wheel at speeds in excess of 80 km/h while separated by mere centimetres.
The PCR driver claimed the win on the penultimate corner ahead of Gold Coast youngster Jack Doohan and Lismore’s Nathan Herne . Queenslanders Lachlan Hughes and Broc Feeney followed Herne, who is the reigning Northern Territory Champion, across the line last weekend.
No less than eight of the top ten finshers in the Queensland Championship have headed across to Darwin for this weekend’s event.
“It’s very encouraging for the future of the sport to see so many youngsters competing at this weekend’s championships,” said Darwin Karting Association President Steve Green.
“While they will be focusing on the victory on the track this weekend, it is also the lessons they learn in the way of driving techniques and car control that are the most important for their futures.”
A total of nine championships will be up for grabs ranging from the Cadets category through to the high performance Leopard Light category where local competitors will make up eight of the 11 starters in the category.
Leading the charge for the local competitors will be the Royce Nott and former Junior Champion Brodie Green while the Davis brothers, Nathan and Matt, along with Adam Garnaut will be charged with flying the Western Australian flag.
Practice will be contested tomorrow and Friday ahead of qualifying and heat races on Saturday. The pre-finals and championship finals will be held on Sunday.
