VSKC Results Round 5 Calder Park 20 July 2013
In what only can be described at trying conditions Round five of the Victorian Superkart club series was held at Calder Park on July 20th.
Staff at Calder Park were most accommodating in ensuring the day proceeded even though the second qualifying session was cancelled due to some heavy rain moving through the area.
ALL drivers showed good considerations for the conditions that prevailed and while we did have some karts kiss the wall, all that was injured was fibreglass fairings.
In the 125cc gearbox Karts it was Sam Zavaglia who dominated. Stephen Castles thought he has it easy after Zavagila spun in final. Zavaglia hunted him down to take the win. A consistent Rick Hobman nudged Castles out taking the second place for the day.
In non gearbox (Rotax) light it was Tim Clarke’s day tangling with sprint racer Jordie Ford and the dominator Russ Occhipinti. Clarke showed good form all day remaining smooth and consistent in very slippery conditions. Occhipinti seemed to struggle in the conditions but he’s dominance in finishing on the podium still bodes well for the series Championship.
In Non Gearbox (Rotax) heavy Rod Clarke (the man of many dry gloves) took the day ahead of Jamie MacDonald who didn’t let the old man get too far ahead.
Non Gearbox Junior saw the return of Quintin Slabbert from Queensland (take note of the name). The club thanks Quintin for sharing the Queensland weather at this meeting however Tyler Williams showed that to finish first, first you must finish held true when the flip flop on the back straight caught the young Quintin out ending his chance for the outright win.
In all a great day’s racing with great kart control shown and hopefully better conditions for Round six at Phillip Island.
