When this weekend’s Australian Speedway Kart Titles fire into action at the home of the New South Wales Speedway Kart Club in Nepean, the Sayre family from Harrington Park will be right in the thick of the action.

With three boys in action, Daniel (15), Luke (14) and Andrew (11), much of the talk around the family’s dinner table over the past few months has been about the biggest event on the Speedway karting calendar.

Following in their Father’s footsteps, the trio has been around the sport of Speedway for their entire lives. Like many families that have motorsport in their blood, they all started racing karts as soon as they could when they turned seven.

At this weekend’s event Daniel and Luke are two of the favourites for the Junior National Light title, won last year by Jake Baines, while Andrew is the reigning champion in the Rookies category.

“At home we get into each other a bit about who’s going to win but once we get on the track, Luke is just another driver who I want to beat,” said Daniel.

“Mum and Dad just tell us to go out there and have fun but most importantly don’t crash into each other. We’ve both had some good results lately and hopefully that continues this weekend.”

While his older brother is the reigning NSW Champion, Luke has been the driver to beat over the past few months – a trend he hopes to continue at this weekend’s Titles.

“I’m pretty confident that I can beat him. I’ve had the upper hand on him over the past few races,” said Luke.

“We’ve got no side bets going on at the moment but I sure hope that I will have the bragging rights after the weekend.”

For the youngest of the trio, Andrew, he admits that there are some nerves coming into this weekend’s event at Nepean.

“I’m a little bit nervous because I won last year and I have to try and defend it. It (Winning last year) was one of the best things that happened to me in my career,” said Andrew, who’s idol is Australian NASCAR star Marcos Ambrose.

“I’ve learnt a lot from watching my brothers race and hope that they also do well this weekend but at the same time I’ll be focusing on my racing and hope to win again.”

The New South Wales Speedway Kart Club will host the Australian Speedway Kart Titles sponsored by Aussie Forklift Repairs at its Nepean circuit this weekend (September 7/8).
