Donald Stevens, Michael Saller and Andrew Sayre were three of the standout performers during the opening day of the 2013 Australian Speedway Kart Titles sponsored by Aussie Forklift Repairs today.

Stevens and Saller shared the honours in the opening two heats of the KT Modified category before Stevens gained the upper hand in the final ten-lap encounter of the day.  As a result, enters tomorrow’s final day at the Nepean Raceway on top of the points score.

“In the last heat the kart was very good, it was hooked up and revving well, but it’s not over until the fat lady sings tomorrow afternoon,” said Stevens.

“Now it’s time to go home tonight, strip the kart, clean it, spend five hours preparing it and get back into it tomorrow – as that’s the day that matters most.”

While Stevens upstaged him in the KT Modified class, Saller took a clean sweep of the Clubman Heavy action to be on track to claim back-to-back Australian crowns in the category.

“It has been a great successful day in Clubman Heavy.  Tomorrow is a new day though and we’ll see what that brings.  I’m sure the competition will toughen up tomorrow so we’ll see how it pans out,” said Saller.

Sayre, the reigning champion in the Rookies category, has found himself on top of the standings at the completion of the opening day for the second year running.

“It feels good to be the top pointscorer for the second year in a row.  I’ve won a lot of races here coming into the race weekend but tomorrow is the big day,” said Sayre.

“Luke Geering and Kaidon Brown will probably be the two toughest drivers to beat but tomorrow.  Hopefully I can do that tomorrow.”

In the Junior National ranks, the final heat saw third-generation racer Marcus Dumesny take the win over Kayla Green, the niece of Australian Sprintcar star Trevor.  Emerging from the day as the top pointscorer was Jake Donaldson, who won his opening two races before crossing the line sixth in heat three.

After last weekend finishing third in the DD2 category at the Rotax Nationals Jaie Robson recorded a pair of second placings in the opening two Clubman Light heats before taking the win in the third.  As a result, he leads the way going into tomorrow’s fourth 10-lap heat and 20-lap main event.

Robson, along with Bradley Cunneen, Michael Jordan and Stevens are likely to be battling near the front of the field in the KT Modified Light category tomorrow.

Gary Morris won two of his three Clubman Over 40s heats to enter tomorrow high in confidence.

Tomorrow’s action will kick off at 10am with each category completing the fourth round of heat races before the all-important 20-lap Title Finals.

The Nepean Raceway is located on Rickards Road, Castlereagh.

Updates throughout the day will be posted on the Australian Karting Association’s Facebook Page (www.facebook.com/AustralianKartingAssociation)
