Senior National Noodle Box Feature

Launceston Kart Club held their final race meeting of the year over the weekend in beautiful Tasmanian spring weather. The race meeting, sponsored by the Noodle Box, saw 53 drivers grid up for the four Senior National Classes of Senior National Light, Senior National Heavy, Over 40s Pro and Over 40s Super Heavy, all using the Yamaha “J “ power.

The meeting also included a 20 lap race for the Phil Goss Memorial. Phil, a dedicated member of the Launceston Kart Club, died in 2009. The race was won by Stephen Bricknell from Freddy Cocca and Andrew Walter. Phil’s wife Teresa and daughter Jessie were on hand to present the memorial trophy to the winner in a very emotional moment for all involved.

Senior National Light saw Gemma Wyllie outpace the boys in qualifying, however in the heats it was locals Jamie Bricknell and Zane Wyatt who took the wins, Come the 12 lap final it was Wyllie that regained her qualifying pace and grabbed a small gap on the field early that she never relinquished, the boys then decided to battle for the remaining place’s on the podium with Daimon Shelton and Bodie Reading coming out on top with Wyatt and Bricknell relegated to 4th and 5th respectively.

Senior National Heavy saw defending title holder Steven Wrigley claim pole position for the heats with quick time in qualifying, the heat racing was frenetic with Michael Jones and Jamie Bricknell claiming one each and Bricknell also winning the Pre-final from Wrigley. The 12 lap final turned out to be a battle of four with Zane Wyatt joining Bricknell , Jones and Wrigley at the front, early pace setter Jones was forced to retire on lap 9 after some contact of karts, Wyatt made the last lap move on Bricknell to claim Senior National Heavy title number 3, with Wrigley and Bricknell completing the podium.

Over 40s Pro Freddy Cocca claimed qualifying honours with a 2 tenth margin over Andrew Walter and Stephen Bricknell, in the heats Cocca dominated the racing wining both convincingly. However in the pre-final Bricknell jumped to the early lead with Cocca falling back to third, Cocca regained the lead on lap two after he and Bricknell made contact entering the fast turn one sweeper with Bricknell ending up in the woodchips. The final saw defending title holder Michael Vaughan add some pressure to Cocca but to no avail as Cocca won his first title from Vaughan and Andrew Walter.

Over 40s Super heavy was once again dominated by defending champ and current Tasmanian State Title holder Scott Wrigley. Wrigley qualified on pole and won both heats the pre-final and Final. Brother’s Allan and Troy Sheahan showed at times the pace to match it with Wrigley however in the end they had to be content with 2nd and 3rd on the day.

There was also a 20 lap Senior National Pro race at the conclusion of the days racing with Aiden Shelton taking the win from Jamie Bricknell and Gemma Wyllie.

In Junior National Light Launceston’s Jackson Callow has made it 3 wins in a row since moving from up Rookies. Callow defeated Zevie Eisentraut with crowd favourite Brody Sward rounding out the podium.

Junior National Heavy saw Coastal driver Wade McLean take a clean sweep of heats and the finals, with locals Justin Murphy and James Fitch filling 2nd and 3rd respectively.

Support racing was provided by Cadets, Rookies, TaG Restricted Light and TaG Restricted Heavy.

Cadets was won by local William Reeve who won all four races from Henry Pears and Zoe Eisentraut. Rookies saw Tate Frost and Kurtis Love share heat wins, however it was Hobart’s Callum Bishop that came good in the final, taking the win from Frost and Lachlan Dalton.

Tag Restricted Light went the way of Launceston’s Jairus Holmes from Kayd Donnelly and Craig Phillips. Tag Restricted Heavy saw Jason Close win in his first meeting back after a 7 month break, Thomas Walter and debutant Frank Archer rounded out the podium.
