Gurr's CIK Return Interrupted By Injury

  10 October 2013

With a week to go before Alan Gurr’s first appearance in a kart at a CIK event in 14 years, nursing cracked ribs is the main focus on his pre-race preparation.

A recent return to karting for Gurr has gotten off to a rough start with cracking his left lower ribs during a test session. After making a promising debut in TAG 125 finishing 2nd in the final behind National front runner Ben Stewart 6 weeks ago, things slowed with Gurr injuring himself during testing.

With Gurr’s last CIK event back in December 1999 at Suzuka Japan for the World Cup, it will be a tough comeback for the ‘99 Oceania Champion. He has teamed up with Ryan McLeod from Racer Industries who was also Gurr’s race engineer when he won on his debut in the V8 Development Series back in 2004, before working again in the Main V8 Championship at Paul Morris Motorsports.

After receiving an invite to the Coates Hire GC600 Stars of Karting event Gurr would have liked a smoother lead up.

“After receiving the invitation I wanted to get out there and do some miles to get up to speed with all the guns that do it week in, week out. Instead I have been nursing my ribs and doing as little as possible. Must be my age catching up with me, I don’t bounce anymore instead I go crack” he said.

Gurr was seen out at the Pimpama karting facility during the week looking at the layout of the circuit, making the comment that he liked the idea of most corners being left handers making things easier on his body.

“I am really looking forward to the event, it will be great to showcase such a great sport to the public and potential new karters. It will also be nice to see the up and coming future of the sport go head to head.”

With Racer Industries being the largest supplier of Motorsport products to V8 Supercars, karting seemed a logical thing to do for McLeod to cover both ends of the spectrum. Based on the Gold Coast Ri will be competing in it’s first major Karting event with Castrol EDGE backed driver Alan Gurr in the new Redspeed chassis.

Gurr and McLeod have worked together on a number of occasions over the past 10 years with great results. Karting being the latest project, Racer Industries (Ri) is the new Redspeed/Topkart supplier for Southern Qld.

McLeod called on Gurr’s previous karting experience to help not only promote the associated brands but to help develop young karters driving talents as they aspire for bigger and better things. Coincidently driving an OTK chassis as he did when he finished his karting career back with karting talent scout Jim Morton.

With practice on the Friday afternoon prior to the Saturday racing, Gurr will be keen to get as many laps in as possible to give him the best chance to run with the new generation of Karters.
