Gippsland Kart Club's first club race day of the year was clouded in smoke. The open cut coal mine near Morwell caught fire due to bush fires in the area a couple of weeks earlier. Smoke and ash from the mine fire has been affecting surrounding communities ever since.
The wind direction last weekend meant Tramway Park Raceway was in the line of fire, so to speak, resulting in reduced visibility and fine ash particles hanging in the atmosphere and falling on the track for most of the day.
