Interstaters Setting The Pace At Nationals

Interstate competitors showed the way during qualifying for the 52nd Australian National Sprint Kart Championships in Newcastle.

While many competitors from the host State have spent weeks on end testing at the Cameron Park circuit, it was drivers from interstate who claimed the all-important pole position in six of the eight classes.

The Victorian pair of David Sera and Dylan Hollis both set the pace in two classes each while Brendan Nelson outpaced his fellow Queenslander Mason Barbera in the X30 Heavy class.

Sera then went on to win the opening heat of Clubman Heavy and cross the line third in the X30 Light class.
“It’s a great start to the weekend, but I’m fully aware that there is still a long way to go before the Champions are crowned,” said Sera, a 15-time National Champion.

“I was able to get a good lead early in heat one of Clubman and then in the X30 heat I conserved a bit to see where I’m at compared to the rest of the field.

“There’s not a lot of passing opportunities on this track, so it is important to get some good results in the heat races to ensure you’re right up the front for the finals.”

Hollis took full advantage of his pole position to win the opening heat of Junior Clubman while South Australian Joshua Denton snared the win on the final lap of heat one in Junior National Light.

In his first visit to the Newcastle circuit Victorian Aaron Cameron posted the fastest qualifying lap in Junior National Heavy while four-time National Champion Matthew Waters from Sydney paced the Senior National field.
In the highly competitive Clubman Light class, Jaie Robson outpaced his Sydney compatriot Kyle Clews during qualifying before claiming the win in the opening heat race.

Of the local drivers, Ryan Pike was the best performer by crossing the line in fifth position in the Junior National Heavy class.  After qualifying 13th fastest in the Junior National Light field that featured 50 competitors, Pike’s younger brother Jordan was caught up in an opening corner incident on lap one of the opening heat.

Racing continues tomorrow with the remaining heats and pre-finals to be contested.  The Championship Finals will be held from 8:30am tomorrow.
