Rain Soaked Practice At Stars of Karting

press release 2 May 2014

Significant rainfall throughout the day has kept competitors in Round Two of the CIK Stars of Karting Championship presented by Castrol EDGE focused on the job at hand in Bolivar, South Australia.

With heavy rain falling throughout the day, all five practice sessions were held in wet conditions – a first for the Championship in several years.

In the KZ2 ranks, reigning champion Joey Hanssen traded fastest times throughout the day with David Sera before 2012 Champion Chris Hays emerged second fastest in the final session of the day.

Hanssen’s fastest time of 39.665 seconds around the 755-metre Bolivar Raceway in the final 15-minute session, that was delayed due to a hail storm just prior to the start, was more than four tenths of a second faster than Hays.  KZ2 newcomer Brock Plumb posted the third fastest time.

“I really enjoy racing in the wet, but since I’ve raced in Australia we’ve never had a wet race,” said Hanssen.

“Over the years I’ve had some good success in the wet throughout Europe including a third placing in the WSK Series and when I won the World Cup in 2011 the final heat race was also wet.

“While it probably doesn’t provide the best spectacle, I wouldn’t mind if the rain continued across the weekend.”
In the KF2 ranks, it was PCR driver Nathan Tigani who set the pace ahead of reigning champion Matthew Waters.

Tigani made his debut in the class at the corresponding round in 2013 and after showing strong speed at that event, he is confident ahead of tomorrow’s qualifying and heat races.

“Straight from the outset the kart was really strong,” said Tigani.

“Last year I was running strongly before seizing an engine in the final, hopefully I finish the job this weekend and get on the podium.”

Darwin driver Bryce Fullwood was fastest in the KF3 ranks with Andrew Kahl also posting some strong times.

In TAG 125 Light, Daniel Rochford made the most of the dry conditions early in the day to be classified as the fastest but it was David Whitmore who was consistently at the top of the timesheets throughout the day.

Victorian Dylan Collett was fastest in TAG 125 Heavy.

Qualifying and three heat races will be contested tomorrow ahead of the finals on Sunday.

All of the action will be streamed exclusively live on Speedcafe.com and will be available on speedcafe.com/kartinglive
