Whyalla Kart Club May Race Meeting

by Jeremy Head 15 May 2014

Saturday May 10th saw 25 karts start the round one make up round.  Race format for this weekend was 3 heats of 10 laps and a final of 15 laps.

The Cadet and Rookie classes have been the go to starters for our club events lately.  This is due to their entertainment value, and again these pint sized racers did not disappoint with Karts going everywhere on the first corner in the first race. Fortunately the only thing dented were a couple of egos.  This however set the stage for some strong fight backs and close racing.  Corey Datson is the only Rookie racing at the moment however this did not keep him from setting some great times and mixing it up with the cadet front runners Troy Fortanier and Cooper Jones.  The fight for third place was just as close with Brayden Stewart taking the honors on a count back from Jessica Fortanier.

To give you an idea of what these kids are doing on the track, they are doing similar lap times to the adults and are getting up to speeds of nearly 70kph.  So hats off to all the kids in the class.

Next out is the combined 125/Clubman Heavy and Light drivers.  The start of the first race here again had some carnage with drivers missing the lights and getting spun around hit by other drivers.  This again left more dented pride and a couple of nose cones rather than much else.

The surprise of the day was the speed that the 125/Clubman Heavy karts had. Although starting at least 2-3 kart lengths behind the Lights the Heavy guys were on them within two corners.  This then meant the Heavy guys were not only having their own race but also trying to keep out of the way of the Lights so as not to affect their race too much.

The Junior National Heavy drivers were very light on with drivers being interstate or working part time jobs.  However the boys in this class continued to drive hard with Rami Lawson in only his second race meeting and proving he has potential.

The last group out for the day was the Sportsman SA.  This weekend’s race saw the return of Darrol Jones.  Darrol picked up where he left off in 2013 with strong first place finishes in all classes.  The real action in this class for the weekend was in the fight for 3rd and 4th with Scott Harper finishing in a tight third for the weekend.

Next race meeting is on Sunday the 1st of June.  We should see a few drivers out there shaking out the bugs ready for the Whyalla City Titles on the 21st and 22nd of June.
