New Structure For Karting Queensland

KARTING QUEENSLAND TO MOVE TO A NEW GOVERNANCE STRUCTURE

The State Karting Council (SKC) of Karting Queensland, have voted unanimously to move towards a new governance structure for the Association.

The new structure will see Karting Queensland transition from an incorporated association to a Company Limited by Guarantee led by an independent Board of Directors.

Improved governance has been longed as a requirement for Karting Queensland to take its management and the sport of karting in the state to the next level.

At the 2013 Annual General Meeting, the SKC unanimously elected to appoint a sub-committee to review the management of the sport in the state.

This sub-committee (comprised of Malcolm Saunders, Annette English and Trevor White) presented their considerations over the last six months and recommendations to the SKC last weekend.  All voting clubs supported a motion of moving to the new corporate structure.

Changing the Management Structure to a Company Limited by Guarantee requires more accountability, increased financial reporting requirements and less self-interest; reflecting a structure recently adopted by Karting Australia.

As soon as practicable,  a Company Limited Constitution will be drafted - modelled from the Australian Karting Australia Ltd Constitution. It will require final ratification by the SKC.  This will be followed by recruitment of a Board of Directors.

“This is the first step, but the move to a Company Limited by Guarantee Management Structure is a huge step forward for the sport of karting in Queensland,” said Karting Queensland President Ashley Waardenberg.

“The Australian Sports Commission has issued mandatory Governance Guidelines for National Sport Organisations, and we expect State Bodies will be next as the Office of Fair Trading has recently created a process to facilitate and encourage incorporated associations to move to companies limited by guarantee.

“We will be the first State body in our sport to move to a modern governance structure and intend to lead the way for state-based Karting organisations in Australia.”

During last weekend’s landmark meeting, the SKC developed a preliminary Board structure comprised of a Chair, Administration, Finance, and Marketing Directors; overseeing functional sub-committees and a commission comprised of member clubs.

The Chair will form part of the National Executive Commission while other directors will work closely with their Karting Australia equivalent.
