Whyalla Club Round 7

from Dave Camwell 24 September 2014

CADETS

Five5 Cadets ranging between 7 and 11 showed up for round 7 of the Whyalla Kart Club Championships, however the Cadet class is not part of the Championships allowing these drivers to concentrate on racing and learning there race craft without the added pressure of worrying about being the Club Champion.

These little guys and girls put on a great display of close wheel to wheel racing, Cooper Jones took out a clean sweep of wins to take out the win for the day, Brayden Stewart did his personal best times in both direction of racing with a time of 30.464 seconds in the anti-clock wise direction and a 30.700 seconds in the clockwise direction, he took out 2nd place for the day.

Cadence Florentinus came in 3rd place and also did her best time in the anti-clockwise direction with a 31.262 seconds, new driver Brayden Lee smashed out some fantastic times for his first ever race with a 31.840 seconds, Brayden Lee and Lilly Reid had some great battles through the day.

RESTRICTED 125/CLUBMAN LIGHT AND HEAVY

The Restricted 125/Clubman Light and Heavy drivers hit the track in force, all year the Heavy drivers have been at it on and off the track, Allan Watt and Brian Sampson have had some great racing and they have had some good old fashion Banta going on in the pits, but when the helmets go on these guys are serious, another driver who is just behind these guys and chomping at the bit is James Marsland, a couple more races under his belt and James will be right in the mix.

The Light drivers did not disappoint, Chris Reid challenge himself by starting at the rear of the field of both the lights and heavies. Chris miscalculated how far back he started which gave Aiden Sossa a gap far greater than what Chis could make up in the laps given, Aiden drove a superb meeting to take out the win with Chris second and new local member Danny Jones came in 3rd in the light class.

JUNIOR NATIONAL COMBINED

Junior National Combined drivers hit the track next, 1st time racer Luke Clarke showed his race craft and had a nice run to finish all 4 races, Luke and ā€˜Pā€™ plate driver Rami Lawson had quite a few good battles during the day.
The fastest junior on the track with his first meeting in Juniors stepping up from Rookies was local Corey Datsun. Corey also took out a new fastest lap record in the clockwise direction of racing with a time of 29.048 seconds, smashing the old record by over 0.8 of a second.

We had 2 Adelaide Juniors in the field who were having a great battle until they took each other out in the final race of the day, both of these drivers are good mates and both took it on the chin, (what good sports they are).

SPORTSMAN SA

Six Sportsman SA drivers hit the track with Dave Camwell racing in this class for the first time, Dave borrowed a Kart and Engine from Neil Schmidt at Inspiration Paints, the package proved successful with Dave setting a new lap record in the clockwise direction with a time of 28.395 about 2 tenths of the old lap record. Heat 3 saw Darrol Jones take a move on Jeremy Head, unfortunately Darrol ran out of bitumen and ran wide into the dirt spinning himself out, Scott Harper was close behind and hit the skids to avoid hitting Darrol and also spun out, the end result was Scott 3rd, Darrol 2nd and Dave 1st.

The Whyalla Kart Club would like to thank the drivers who travelled from Broken Hill and Adelaide to compete.
Thanks to all the officials, it is much appreciated, especially the ones who have kids racing but still manage to take on such important roles, this would be people such as Ron Florentinus and Walter Sossa.

The new canteen manager Melissa Stewart and her staff kept everyone well fed and watered throughout the day.
Our next meeting is on November 29th and will be our final round for the year, gate entry is FREE.
